Don't repeat your CV
A cover letter should accompany your CV and not just regurgitate it. You should choose to mention only the most relevant experiences or qualifications for the job you're applying for.
Avoid Copying and Pasting
The internet is a fantastic tool to help you find a job but don't abuse it. There are many sites offering exemplar cover letters and you may well be tempted to copy them. But if you've found the, it's probably also the case that the recruiters have found it as well. By all means, use examples for inspiration but don't pass them off as your own.
Don't use more than one page
Before listing every summer job you had through university and every job since, first ask yourself how relevant those experiences are to the job you're currently applying for. For example if you're applying for a Finance Manager possition, your past experience as a Waiter isn't relevant. Keep it concise; carefully pick only a few relevant examples to talk about.
Don't just talk about yourself
The recruitment process has many similarities with a game of seduction . Normally, we are not attracted to people who only talk about themselves. Recruiters feel the same feeling when they receive letters selfish motivation . Try to learn about the company and show in your application why you chose them.
Don't Rush
Mistake's are easily made and sometimes hard to spot but sending a cover letter with mistakes looks unprofessional and careless. Take the time to check through your letter atleast twice or get a friend to reread it.
Don't Use passive and negative forms
Avoid negative formulations of style " I could not", " I do not have enough experience ". You should appear confident and possitive in your cover letter. An employer won't want to employ someone who is negative and not confident of their abilities.
