Oxford university professor Dr Paul Kelley carried out a study showing that our body is regulated on a natural cycle that can’t be changed. According to him, we are living in a sleep-deprived society which is hugely damaging on the body’s system because of the effects on our physical and emotional systems in the body. Going to work before 10am makes employees more subject to getting ill, tired and stressed.
Before the age of 55 years old, our biological clock doesn’t match the traditional 9am to 5pm working hours. Trying to fit in these working hours and thus going against our biological cycle, can have strong impacts on our performance, our mood and general well-being.
It’s the same case for children: several studies have shown that children are not able to concentrate properly on their school work before 8.30am. Teenagers require even more sleep: a 16 year old should start school at 10am to obtain better results and students at 11am.
Here are a few tips to getting better sleep:
• Exercise any way, any time!
• Go red! Using a red bulb in your bedroom avoids suppressing melatonin which keeps you up with regular light bulbs
• Get the right temperature! 61 degrees is a good average for a good night’s sleep
• Jot down your worries: stressful thoughts can keep you up all night. Our advice is to keep a notebook on your bedside table. When stressful thoughts occur, write them down. This will help you clear your mind and rest peacefully
Sweet dreams!
