Even if France is being considered the second largest economy in Europe after Germany,
the average unemployment rate in France (9.8%) is higher than in the UK (7.2%). Moreover, despite the common belief that in France they don't work much, the French work harder than the British. The OECD reports that the average number of hours per week worked in France stood at 38 hours for 2011, compared to 36.4 in the UK. Besides, the 35-hour week progressively becomes a vestige of the past, especially in the private sector, where the working hours can reach 44 hours a week.
