The project: This role will require SC Clearance. Must hold a British Passport. This role may require 2-3 days in Derby per week. The role is for a data engineer specialising in the Microsoft technology stack. It is a client-facing role supporting fee-earning projects and programmes. The principal responsibility of the role is to contribute to the development of digital tools, processes and outputs, including the data infrastructure underpinning all BI activity, that support the wider project team and enable effective delivery of projects for our clients. Our growing digital centre of excellence team is responsible for enabling and enhancing project delivery through the development of digital tools, processes and reports that enable data-driven decision making. As part of your role, you will interface with the Mace project team and occasionally stakeholders from other organisations, if working on a joint venture project or directly for a client. You will be part of the digital centre of excellence community, sharing knowledge and experience with other BI & data professionals. Any experience with Microsoft Fabric in the last 12 months would be considered highly desirable. The ideal candidate would hold a DP-600 (fabric data engineer) certification from Microsoft. You’ll be responsible for: Identifying the best method for extracting data from source systems on a case-by-case basis. Understand, and be able to draw on, effective use of tools such as Notebooks, Dataflow Gen2 and PowerShell. Managing credentials, including service accounts and interfaces with Azure Key Vault, to ensure connections are made in the most secure way. Building integrations with appropriate error handling and business logic to ensure there is no corruption, omission or duplication of ingested data. Applying the fundamentals of data transformation (such as cleaning and optimising structure of data into fact and dimension tables) using data factory and/or supporting tools. Ensuring data brought into the data platform meets the needs of downstream users, including the BI development team. Storing and transforming data using a medallion architecture, drawing on Lakehouse and warehouse assets as appropriate. Overseeing the operation and maintenance of daily and periodic pipelines, optimising efficiency and proactively resolving issues when they occur. You’ll need to have: Knowledge of good data structure Understanding of data security Effective management of version control throughout the development process Evidence of organised ways of working to manage deliverables to time and quality Understanding of working in a consultancy environment and management of stakeholders including clients, colleagues and data owners. Work with Microsoft’s Fabric platform, principally within the data engineering and data warehousing workflows. There is opportunity to explore and grow your skill set into other elements of the platform, such as data science, as well as horizontally into Power Platform applications such as Power BI, Power Apps and Power Automate, should you choose to. Knowledge of Microsoft’s productivity suite, including SharePoint, Teams and Office 365. A foundational understanding of SQL language is a requirement of the role. Any experience of supporting BI & data analytics software and languages such as Python, JSON, R, etc. would be a benefit but is not a requirement. You’ll also have to: Work independently within your role as part of a development team, being responsible for all data engineering and data platform assets. Interface with other digital professionals and ensure that the BI development team have timely access to all required data to support project activity. Adhere to a structured development lifecycle that includes requirements definition, design, development and testing, user acceptance testing, deployment, handover and post-implementation support. Attend all training and other sessions organised by the centre of excellence, as well as keeping your knowledge of the industry up to date through self-endeavour and structured training as directed.
