Background to the Appointment Wayland Additive is a cutting-edge additive manufacturing company focused on developing advanced metal 3D printing technologies. Our innovative and patented NeuBeam process enables the production of complex metal parts, particularly in high performing novel materials. As we continue to expand our presence in the industry, we are seeking a talented Applications Engineer to join our dynamic team. The Job As an Applications Engineer at Wayland Additive, based in Huddersfield, UK, you will play a key role in developing our Calibur 3 platform. You will work on developing our novel Infrared and 3D scanning camera systems, as well as with other machine and process data, with the aim of improving the monitoring and control capabilities of our 3D printing process. A key part of your role will understanding Calibur 3’s process and integrating the operation and data output of these sensors into our build control software. This will involve incorporating a wide range of algorithms from automatic feature recognition to control theory. You will work in close collaboration with the R&D engineering teams and our academic collaborators, who are working in machine learning and control. While appropriate experience is highly desirable, even more important is an aptitude and mindset for innovation; learning and developing new techniques; and a willingness to collaborate closely both with customers and colleagues to find solutions to technical challenges. Data Analysis: Developing new ways to use data from Calibur 3 to monitor and control our novel NeuBeam process. Including projects involving image processing, algorithm development and data visualisation. System Development: Continued development of Calibur 3’s in process monitoring systems and the integration of their outputs. Using knowledge and understanding of the data to assist other teams with tuning and optimisation of systems. Documentation & Communication: Maintain records of processes, testing and system capabilities and report on them in an effective and efficient manner. Collaboration: Liaise with internal teams and customers to develop Calibur 3’s capabilities and find their challenges in using the in process monitoring and analysis systems, feeding this into development work. Skills & Experience Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred. Equivalent industry experience will also be considered. Strong technical aptitude and the ability to understand complex engineering concepts and systems. Problem-solving mindset with the ability to adapt to evolving technical challenges and apply your skills and experience to new problems. Programming experience in relevant languages (Python, Matlab, C++, etc). Image processing, algorithm development or machine learning experience is desirable. Experience with data analysis techniques and their application in feedback systems. Image analysis, machine learning experience, or working with data from AM systems is desirable. Strong mathematical ability and experience of applying this in an engineering context. Experience in additive manufacturing, preferably with a focus on metal 3D printing technologies. Experience in electron beam additive manufacturing is desirable.
