Job Introduction
The BBC is renowned for making compelling TV and radio, and the way users watch and listen is evolving fast. On their phones, on the go, on laptops and consoles, apps like iPlayer and BBC Sounds offer world-class content anywhere, any time.
To make that happen, the Media Services team provides a fleet of high-performing cloud microservices to prepare, transform, package and deliver content over the internet. As our newest Tester, you’ll help us keep things running smoothly as we add new features or renew and streamline our estate.
You’ll integrate fully with our Agile development teams, participating in ceremonies and contributing to improvements.
Interview Process
There will be two interview stages, starting in May. One stage will focus on technical aptitude and the other will explore soft skills. Each will last 60-90 minutes, and one will include a hands-on workshop exercise.
Main Responsibilities
* Making a test plan by researching and exploring current functionality, then reviewing documentation and specifications.
* Using Postman and the AWS console to set up tests by uploading files, sending hand-crafted requests and messages, and tailoring permissions and configurations.
* Composing clear and concise test scenarios in Gherkin language (given/when/then).
* Implementing those scenarios in our Java automation framework and integrating them into CI pipelines.
* Doing ad-hoc or exploratory testing on a Jira task handed over by an Engineer.
* Analysing system outputs including log messages and database entries using tools like Splunk and DynamoDB.
* Investigating test failures to establish what went wrong, how the components interacted, and whether there is a genuine bug.
* Writing a bug report in Jira, with clear information to help others understand and reproduce.
* Retesting fixes, paying close attention to 'unintended consequences' and using experience and intuition to focus in the right areas.
* Sorting out problems with the test environment by tuning configuration, scaling or redeploying components.
Are you the right candidate?
You don’t need experience in media or streaming technologies, but you must have strong Java coding skills and know your way around AWS, including EC2, S3, SQS/SNS, IAM and Lambda. You’ll be technically minded and able to work on APIs and backend systems with little or no user interface.
Your testing mindset and attitude are important: being methodical and thorough are essential, but we also need someone inquisitive and curious who feels the need to understand how and why things work. You must be able to find and diagnose tricky bugs, so you’ll need the tenacity to keep exploring combined with a good sense of when to ask for help.
We’re looking for a natural problem solver and logical thinker: our systems are extensive and complex, so you’ll need to assemble information and join the dots to form a comprehensive mental model.
We are a small Test Team, so the ability to work efficiently with minimal guidance is crucial, and you must be comfortable building a strong support network encompassing Engineers, Product Managers, and Business Analysts as well as other Testers.
About The BBC
The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.
We don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you’ve read about our values and behaviours here.
Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.
We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC – whether that’s to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.
We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise. #J-18808-Ljbffr
