As a Senior Data Engineer within the Chief Digital Office (CDO) at Social Security Scotland, you will play a crucial role in developing robust data infrastructure and systems that underpin our diverse digital initiatives. Collaborating with a growing team of digital experts across Engineering & Cloud Services, Architecture, Applications and more, you will design and implement data flows that facilitate analytics and business intelligence.

A Senior Data Engineer delivers the designs set by more senior members of the data engineering community.
At this role level, you will:
• Implement data flows to connect operational systems, data for analytics and business intelligence (BI) systems
• Re-engineer manual data flows to enable scaling and repeatable use
• Support the build of data streaming systems
• Write ETL (extract, transform, load) scripts and code to ensure the ETL process performs optimally
• Build accessible data for analysis
DDaT Pay Supplement:
This post attracts a £5000 Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) pay supplement after a 3 months DDaT competency qualifying period. The payment will be backdated to your start date in the role. Pay supplements are temporary payments designed to address recruitment and retention issues caused by market pressures and are subject to regular review. This post is part of the Scottish Government DDaT profession. As a member of the profession you will join the professional development system, currently BCS Role Mode plus.
Main Duties:
• Design, build and test data products based on feeds from multiple systems, using a range of different storage technologies, access methods or both.
• Create repeatable/reusable and scalable products.
• Create and maintain appropriate data models.
• Can carry out simple analysis of errors for databases, data processes, data products and services.
• Design and code programs or scripts in SQL and Python which meet user stories and requirements.
• Code, amend and refactor moderately complex programs / scripts in accordance with the design.
• Perform data transformation and normalisation tasks to make the data usable for analysis and reporting purposes.
• Keep up to date with relevant technologies, concepts, and frameworks.
• Contribute and support conversations in meetings, e-mails, documentation, and workshops with relevant stakeholders.
• Engage with your Digital Data and Technology specialist community, for example attending community knowledge exchanges, and providing technical peer support of various kinds – whether expert consultancy advice, code review, or pair programming.
