The successful candidate will be expected to provide and promote the highest possible standards of care based on professionally determined standards and accept accountability for the patient as an individual, providing autonomy. The post holder will assess care and provide a seamless service from receiving the referral through to the completion of care.
Main duties of the job
* Coordinate the smooth flow of the daily running of the unit
* Troubleshooting
* Lead in an emergency situation
* Assess the referrals and delegate appropriately
* Completion of the rota and ensuring it is updated appropriately
* Lead the safety huddles daily
* Assist in all areas on the unit, as and when required for the needs of the service
* Assessing patients blood results against their plan and acting accordingly
* Dealing with complaints and incidents
* Ensuring risk assessments, SOPs, policies and procedures are up to date
* Encourage/promote staff development
* Assist in the recruitment and selection process

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
CLINICAL
1. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care and interventions for patients whose needs may be complex and multifactorial in nature, seeking support from the specialist team in times where a situation is beyond the post-holders’ scope of professional practice/competence.
2. To act as a trouble shooter, resource, mentor, and clinical supervisor for colleagues as appropriate.
3. Support the senior sister to develop and maintain safe systems of work with the team i.e. policy development, PGDs and SOPs.
4. Assist in the investigation of all incidents/accidents that occur on the unit.
5. Assist with any complaints that are received.
6. To develop and maintain a continuing and caring relationship with the regular patients and their carers ensuring that patient confidentiality, dignity, and autonomy are upheld.
7. Completion of the staff rota complying with the trusts calendar publishing guidance. Ensuring it is kept up to date with the appropriate sickness/absence and input any shift changes that have been agreed as timely as possible.
8. Establish a safe working environment for patients and staff and ensure that patient dignity is compromised as little as possible.
9. Rotate around the unit for the needs of the service.
10. Coordinate the unit daily ensuring it flows smoothly and patients receive safe, personal, and effective care.
11. Action any relevant telephone calls and monitor the referrals and check any results required prior to passing on to the admin coordinator.
COMMUNICATION
1. Communicate with patients, visitors, and colleagues by telephone, face to face, in writing or electronically.
2. Take the lead with daily safety huddles AM & PM to ensure the effective running of the service, highlighting any issues and dealing with them appropriately.
3. Carry out the monthly team meeting in the absence of the band 7.
4. Co-operate with members of the multi-disciplinary team.
5. Be able to confidently communicate effectively in a sensitive manner whilst having difficult conversations with patients/relatives and staff.
6. Be able to communicate in demanding and often challenging situations, i.e. resolving conflict.
7. Represent the band 7 at meetings in their absence and be prepared to take the lead in holding meetings.
EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT
1. Attend mandatory training and reviews as local policy.
2. Participate in your performance review process, achieve objectives, and develop professionally through self-development.

5. Ensure staff keep up to date with training, allowing time for them to do so.
6. Participate in research and learning projects ongoing in the department.

3. To report as soon as is practically possible any hazards or defects.
4. To report as soon as is practically possible accidents or untoward incidents and to ensure appropriate incident reporting documentation is completed.
5. Be actively involved as an appropriate department representative and assist with any investigations, taking the lead when required.
6. Ensure all policies, procedures and risk assessments are carried out/updated when required.
7. Ensure your training and staff training needs are complied with.
