Background
The post holder will hold a Research Fellow position, working on health economics and value proposition projects within the recently awarded NIHR University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) HealthTech Research Centre (NIHR UHB HRC). The NIHR UHB HRC will deliver a national centre of excellence to support the translation of new healthcare technologies safely, effectively and efficiently into routine care for NHS patients and follow-on social care.
Companies approach us to help develop ideas for technology that they hope to take to market. One type of support we provide is health economic modelling – value of investment analysis. This analysis is particularly required when we seek to raise more money – at this point we need to explain the ‘value proposition’. This post will therefore create an outstanding opportunity for an economist to work at the interface of industry and academia. Thirty percent of the appointee’s time will be reserved to pursue a project of their choice in collaboration with the substantial health economic capacity in the College of Medicine and Health.
The post holder will be joining a vibrant and multidisciplinary research team based within the Department of Applied Health Research and will work with the Department’s established team of health economists in the Health Economics Unit (HEU). The post holder will also have the opportunity to register for a PhD.
Role Summary
* To work on high quality economic analysis and value proposition that fall within the remit of the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre.
* To support the Theme Leads in novel methodological questions and make a methodological contribution to the field of supply-side health economics and technology-based health economic evaluations.
* Support protocol development for further grant applications.
* To write reports for the stakeholders; disseminating research results at academic and policy relevant meetings and contributing to academic publications, effective media, research seminars and meetings.
* Contribute to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, and public engagement activities.
Main Duties
The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below:
* Work with the HealthTech Research Centre and industry partners.
* Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required.
* Contribute to writing bids for research funding.
* Analyse and interpret data.
* Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding.
* Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc.
* Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods.
* Undertake management/administration arising from research.
* Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration.
* Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews.
* Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters.
* Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research.
* Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines.
* Promote equality and value diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
Person Specification
* First degree in area of health economics or statistics and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications.
* High level analytical capability.
* Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
* Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones.
* Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively.
* Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
* Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project.
* Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort.
* Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
