The Royal Marsden NHS Trust is Europe's largest comprehensive cancer centre, renowned both nationally and internationally for its excellence in patient care, research, development, and education. Our laboratories operate across three sites: Central London (Chelsea), Cavendish Square, and Sutton in Surrey. We now have a 1-year fixed-term vacancy for an enthusiastic and capable Medical Laboratory Assistant at our Sutton site.
The Blood Sciences department processes approximately 350,000 samples annually, striving to deliver the best possible service to our users. In this role, you will support Biomedical Scientists by receiving and managing samples to ensure they are processed efficiently and meet required turnaround times.

Main duties of the job
The post-holder will perform basic tasks to support the Biomedical Scientists within the Blood Sciences laboratories in accordance with Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs). The post holder will organise and receive samples ensuring they are processed in a timely manner, including samples analysed on site and referred to other laboratories
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. To assist with the receipt and processing of samples in accordance with SOP's.
2. Undertake specimen reception and data entry with a high level of accuracy
3. Collection and delivery of transport bags and consumables to and from bus / taxi.
4. Assisting in preparing Blood Sciences and Microbiology samples for transport as needed
5. Undertake pre-analytical processing of samples such as centrifugation, and post-analytical tasks such as filing/archiving
6. Undertake general portering duties within Pathology
7. Assist in monitoring stock control of consumables held in the department

Education/Qualifications
Essential criteria
8. Good general education. GCSE grade C or higher in English and Maths. A level or equivalent relevant experience.
Desirable criteria
9. ECDL or equivalent
10. BSc (Hons) or equivalent qualification
Experience

11. Previous experience in a laboratory role
12. Experience of MS Excel and MS Word, including creating and using spreadsheets

13. Experience of working in a Blood Sciences department or NHS organisation
14. Able to perform basic training

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff
At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
