About the Opportunity We are currently recruiting for a Principal Civil Engineer to join our Nuclear Power and Engineering Technical Services (NPETS) business. NPETS is entering an exciting phase, supporting the UK's nuclear fleet through business transformation and collaborating with new Small Modular Reactor (SMR) developers. Our work spans across New Build, Generation, Life Extension, and Defueling projects, with our capabilities in high demand throughout the nuclear sector. The Role: Are You Good at Spinning Plates? While literal plate-spinning may not be required, the figurative skill is critical for keeping nuclear power stations operating safely, contributing to the UK's Net Zero Carbon target, and preparing them for decommissioning. The UK's five operating nuclear power stations deliver 16% of the nation's energy. Supporting these stations and defueling the three stations that have ceased operations involves delivering hundreds of projects - and managing all of these plates is where you come in. Your role will be to coordinate civil engineering teams and activities, delivering complex engineering solutions to meet time, cost, and quality objectives on projects of varying sizes. With the many moving parts and complexities of project delivery, you'll work alongside Operations Managers and Engineering Managers. Key Responsibilities Project Delivery Work within integrated multi-disciplinary teams to deliver high-profile projects. Manage programmes and resources, ensuring delivery aligns with time and budget constraints. Technical Challenges Take ownership of technical challenges, develop strategies, and implement solutions through collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. Design Deliverables Produce and review design deliverables, including assumption notes, technical specifications, and calculation notes. SMR Support Collaborate with international SMR developers to pass through the Office of Nuclear Regulation's Generic Design Assessment process. Leadership Direct resources to perform design and analysis tasks as needed. Support preparation of fee proposals and fulfill Construction Design and Management (CDM) responsibilities. Safety Case Inputs Develop and review safety case inputs such as: Safety Functional Requirements (SFRs). Structural Design Method Statements (SDMSs). Design Substantiation Reports (DSRs). Review and justify design decisions to the Office of Nuclear Regulation (ONR). About You Education & Qualifications: MEng, MSc, BEng, or BSc in Civil Engineering or a related degree. Chartered status with a relevant institution (e.g., ICE or IStructE). Experience & Skills: Ability to work within and lead a design team while collaborating across multi-disciplinary teams. Experience designing and/or constructing civil engineering solutions using Eurocodes (experience with American codes is a plus). Demonstrable experience in designing heavy infrastructure projects, particularly within nuclear or regulated industries. Proficiency in finite element modelling software and associated post-processing tools, including validation and verification of outputs. Understanding of design tools in a Building Information Modelling (BIM) environment. Knowledge of UK Nuclear Regulatory processes in civil engineering (desirable). Why Work with Us?
