Medical Electronics is a busy department responsible for maintaining medical equipment throughout Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and across the County of Somerset. The department provides a comprehensive service carrying out the routine calibration, maintenance, repair, and management of the Trust's Medical Equipment.
We are looking to recruit a highly motivated individual in the role of an apprentice to join our team. This role supports the department across Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.
The working hours are 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday 08:30 am to 05:00 pm, with placements to undertake academic/practical training. We are able to offer a level 2/4 training in Healthcare Science (Clinical Engineering bias) with Dudley College/Avensys Training, depending on your level of learning requirements. Salary starts at Apprentice NMW £6.40 an hour (rising to £7.55 in April 2025) for the 1st year, then age dependent NMW.
Main duties of the job
As an apprentice, you will undertake training to carry out a wide range of technical activities associated with the use and management of medical technologies. This will include checking new equipment, testing functionality, and carrying out simple repairs:
* Participate in team and Trust meetings as requested.
* Play a key supporting role in the care and maintenance of a broad range of medical equipment throughout Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, including across community sites.
* Be a well-organised, numerate, reliable, and technically minded individual.
* Demonstrate attention to detail along with good communication skills.
* Work on your own initiative and as part of a team.
* Ideally, be a car driver with a valid driving licence or have access to transport with appropriate business insurance to travel throughout the region, to meet the needs of the service.
Desirable candidates should have 4 GCSEs in Science, English, and Maths (minimum C/4 grades) or preferably A or T levels and meet the funding eligibility criteria as well (see full details in the job description section).

Job responsibilities
Dudley College/Avensys Training enrolment criteria and eligibility requirements.
You will learn, develop, and be part of the team which provides a comprehensive support service by carrying out routine calibration, maintenance, and repair of the Trust's Medical Equipment.
This apprenticeship online programme with Dudley College will cover a wide range of knowledge, skills, and behaviours, and will cover units such as:
* The role of the medical engineer
* Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace
* Mathematics for Engineering Technicians
* Acceptance Testing, Maintaining, Fault Finding, and Decommissioning of Medical Equipment
* Anatomy, Physiology, and Measurement
* A range of other mandatory and optional units
You will require 4 GCSEs at Grade C/4 or equivalent, including Mathematics, English, and a Science. Relevant industry experience and a clear DBS check.
You will be expected to have a sound level of mathematics and a good level of written English. Evidence of GCSE Grade A-C in maths and English, or Functional Skills Level 2 equivalent is a requirement for entry onto this course; you will need to provide evidence prior to enrolment.
Funding Eligibility Requirements:
* Lived in the UK for 3 years+
* Non-UK nationals who have been ordinarily resident in the UK and Islands for at least the previous 3 years on the first day of learning and:
* Have permission granted by the UK government to live in the UK and such permission is not for educational purposes only, or
* Have obtained pre-settled or settled status under EUSS.
Prior learning and experience will be taken into consideration on an individual basis; diagnostic tests will be carried out prior to college enrolment.
