The role
Do you want to share your love of sport with others? Portsmouth High School is seeking an enthusiastic and active assistant to join our PE department. If you have a love for working with children and encouraging them to reach their potential in sport, this opportunity is for you.
You'll have the chance to collaborate with experienced teachers, assisting in the delivery of engaging lessons and accompanying students to matches. You will get to work with a wide age range – from primary years through to Sixth Formers, helping to nurture and develop a love of PE and sport in our students.
This is a full time, fixed term role until 10th July 2026 and is term time only.
You will be a dedicated and committed individual, with a proactive approach to planning and prioritising work. You will also demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to give time to support school events and activities. Strong communication and ICT skills, as well as a good telephone manner will be essential for success in this role. A sports coaching qualification is desirable, but not essential.

The PE Department
While some students enjoy national success, sport at the school is inclusive not exclusive: participation is important, regardless of level. Girls enjoy a varied curriculum, including the traditional sports of hockey, netball, cricket, swimming, tennis, rounders and athletics. We also have a wide choice of co-curricular sports supported by specialist coaches offering girls the opportunity to try something new and discover fresh interests and talents.
The school also has use of excellent local sports facilities including co-ownership of a multi-use games area of four floodlit courts, access to a synthetic turf pitch for hockey and football, as well as a grass athletics track. The school site hosts several netball / tennis courts and a large sports hall.
The school
Portsmouth High School has been educating girls since 1882. The school is located in Southsea, an attractive region on the south coast with excellent transport links. The area has retained much of its original Georgian character; notably, two of the school buildings were designed by architect Thomas Ellis Owen who was instrumental in shaping development of the local area.
We are a welcoming and caring community, committed to staff well-being. The school offers a range of career opportunities both internally and more widely throughout the GDST network.
