General Porter (NHS AfC: Band 2) - Portering Services - Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
Two full-time Portering positions have become available within the Facilities Department working for Derbyshire Healthcare Foundation Trust. The roles undertake Portering duties to support services within DHCF Trust, working predominantly between two key sites: Kingsway Hospital and The Radbourne Unit, which is based within the Royal Derby Hospital grounds, both internally and externally.
The roles incorporate manual handling tasks and walking, so a good level of fitness is required. Applicants must hold a driving license as driving duties form a key part of the daily role.
The posts are offered with a working pattern of 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8.30am-4.30pm. Weekends and bank holidays are covered on an as-and-when basis following a team rota.
The roles include the collection and delivery of linen, refuse, clinical waste, transportation of mail, pharmacy, medical gases, and equipment around the Trust premises. The successful candidates will follow a schedule of work in accordance with Trust and departmental operational procedures.
The post holders will provide a high-quality Portering Service as members of a small but dedicated team while being flexible to accommodate the changing requirements of the services we support. The successful post holders will require a degree of flexibility in order to assist covering weekends and bank holidays should the need arise.

Key result areas (Main duties/responsibilities):
1. The post room provides a mail sorting facility for the Kingsway Site and Radbourne Unit, and associated properties and services within the DHCF Trust.
2. Liaising with delivery drivers and performing Banksman Duties to ensure the provision and maintenance of a safe area.
3. To provide a timed mail delivery and collection service within the Kingsway Site and Radbourne Unit Royal Derby Hospital site in accordance with the delivery schedule.
4. Daily undertake the collection and delivery of the Mental Health Act documents safely and securely using the tagged bags provided.
5. To follow all procedures and work schedules relating to the delivery and collection of mail to include receipting of special mail deliveries.
6. To ensure that circulars, periodicals, and staff magazines are distributed as required.
7. To deliver all goods received to the appropriate areas, ensuring that the operational procedures for delivery are followed and signatures are obtained.
8. To ensure that the post room area is kept clean, safe, and secure.
9. To ensure that the stationery stocks held within the post room are delivered as necessary and follow all defined stock handling procedures.
10. Collect and transport Pathology specimens to relevant departments in accordance with the timed schedules and any urgent requests are responded to in a timely manner.
11. To provide a daily collection service of soiled laundry, refuse, and non-clinical waste for both locations.
12. Deliver Pharmacy goods in accordance with the receipt control signatory paperwork.
13. To provide a weekly waste glass collection from wards and departments within Kingsway and the Radbourne Unit.
14. To provide a secure collection and disposal service for confidential waste in accordance with the confidential waste handling policy.
15. To exchange full clinical waste containers ensuring that waste is never allowed to accumulate, providing empty containers whenever the need arises outside the normal scheduled collections.
16. To exercise vigilance and efficiency in and around the two sites to ensure all areas are free from empty stillages, tote boxes, and general rubbish.
17. To ensure that voice mail messages to the department are accurately actioned in the absence of the charge hand porter.
18. To ensure that all vehicles are checked daily prior to use completing the forms or electronic systems provided, any defects are reported immediately to the charge hand porter, as and when required to connect the electric vehicles to the chargers.
19. To deliver oxygen cylinders as required using the receipting delivery form.
20. In liaison with the charge hand porter, action any removal requests following all associated risk assessments ensuring the tasks are performed safely for staff involved.
21. To prepare rooms for meetings and presentations as requested.
22. Driving electric vehicles and vans to assist with removals forms a daily part of the role, so a valid driving license is required for this post.
23. To attend any training courses identified as relevant to the post or to assist personal development.
24. Daily ensure the Radbourne unit, especially the courtyard areas, are free from smoking residue and general rubbish.
25. Assist in supporting job training for new Porters as part of their induction.
26. To comply with all Trust Policies, Procedures, and initiatives.
27. Undertake any other appropriate duties as may be delegated from time to time by Nominated Supervisor / Manager.
