NHS Shetland is the most northerly health service in Scotland and is a unique setting in which to develop your career. We are a small organisation, with circa 700 staff looking after the health needs of 23,000 people spread across 15 islands. We are proud to provide a highly integrated, person centred and multi-professional service to our communities.
The Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service is based in Lerwick and serves a population of approx. 5,000 (0-19years) which contains a diverse socio-economic mix of population. This is an exciting opportunity to take up a new post contributing to the development of the CAMHS team in Shetland. As a result of the national specification for CAMHS, we are seeking a 0.4 WTE Consultant in Child and Psychiatry (including neurodevelopment and learning disabilities) to join us. Our team includes CAMHS Nurses, Nurse Therapists and a Psychologist serving the population of children and adolescents in Shetland with moderate to severe mental health conditions.
The Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist will be located in Shetland’s main town of Lerwick within the CAMHS Department. The post holder will provide advice and leadership with other senior professionals in the team on child and adolescent mental health disorders and their management to patients, families and multi-agency colleagues within the context of GIRFEC processes. They will provide direct psychiatry input to children, young people and families. They will be responsible to the Chief Executive via the Medical Director and the Director of Nursing and Acute Services. This is a new post and is an addition to the existing team of Psychologists, nurse therapists and CAMHS nurses.
The team is part of a comprehensive network of North of Scotland CAMHS network who support clinical decision-making for the smaller health boards. Forensic CAMHS and in-patient services are accessed through NHS Grampian and NHS Tayside, who are part of the North of Scotland network. The North of Scotland Tier 4 CAMHS network provides consultation and admission if required for adolescents aged 12 to 18 years of age and we have close working relationships with them.
This is a beautiful part of the world, with a satisfyingly different lifestyle from the metropolitan centres. The diverse nature of Shetland’s culture, the stunning scenery, the wildlife, even the local dialect, as well as the spread of different islands all make for particular professional and personal challenges.
Closing Date: 08/12/24
Interview Date: 13/01/25 (afternoon)
In promoting equal opportunities, we welcome applications from all sections of the community.
