Job Introduction
We’re recruiting up to four Senior Journalists to join BBC News Long Form Audio, working mainly on The Global Story podcast.
The daily pod is being relaunched this spring with a new editorial vision, with a greater emphasis on narrative storytelling. The BBC is investing in The Global Story to become the equivalent of the “front page” of the BBC in North America. The show will provide a deep dive on one big international story every day, giving the audience a deeper understanding of the context and stories that lie behind major global events.
Long Form Audio is the BBC’s home of in-depth story-telling, producing some of the most listened to audio in the world. We produce content for multiple BBC radio networks, including The Briefing Room, Profile, More or Less, Crossing Continents, From Our Own Correspondent and AntiSocial for BBC Radio 4, and Assignment, Witness History, The Inquiry, The Climate Question and People Fixing the World for the BBC World Service.
This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of the founding team of this highly ambitious podcast, which will be a core part of the BBC’s offering to the US market.
Main Responsibilities
* Generate ideas & develop them for broadcast.
* The successful candidate will have strong editorial judgement.
* Use narrative audio techniques to tell stories in the most compelling and engaging way possible.
* Successfully edit high impact interviews with fast turnarounds and tight deadlines.
* Extensive knowledge of international news and a track record in spotting trends and stories behind the headlines.
* Maintain professional journalistic standards of accuracy, impartiality and fair dealing whilst adhering to the BBC's Editorial guidelines.
* Track record in generating, producing and commissioning journalism that creates widespread impact including online, other broadcast outlets, digital and social media.
Are you the right candidate?
We’re looking for a creative Senior Journalist who shows bags of initiative and passionately cares about telling the most compelling stories. In building our team, we hope to recruit Senior Journalists who are international news experts as well as Senior Journalists who are narrative storytelling experts, and we encourage journalists from both backgrounds to apply.
You’ll be bursting with ideas on how to make the podcast distinctive from other daily news programmes and accessible to listeners who don’t already follow international news closely. You’ll have the vision and production flair to produce fantastic output with a keen sense of how to tell stories narratively interweaving interviews, script, audio from on the ground, archive, sound and music. The Senior Journalists play a critical role in shaping the creative vision for the podcast and will output edit the pod on a day-to-day basis, working with producers and the pod host to deliver world-class storytelling and showcase the very best of BBC journalism.
* Experience of producing high quality, creative audio output in a fast-paced environment, with tight deadlines.
* A good knowledge and understanding of the global news agenda and an ability to add depth and context, and tell the stories behind the headlines is desirable.
* A strong understanding of narrative audio storytelling techniques and how to deploy them effectively to create gripping and engaging content is desirable.
* Awareness and understanding of external news podcast market and how TGS fits in.
* Track record of leading junior team members, getting the best out of people and ensuring they’re able to deliver their best quality work.
* Experience of working with presenters.
* Can maintain personal effectiveness by managing emotions in the face of pressure and setbacks.
* Can demonstrate an approach to work that is characterised by commitment, motivation and energy.
The successful candidate will be part of the Long Form Audio team, and may also have the opportunity to work across the department’s other strands and projects.
