TheAnalytical Projects Unit provideanalytical expertise and support to critical projects across HMTreasury (HMT). Members of our team are deployed on projectscovering a range of public policy issues – both influencing HMT’smacroeconomic policy within Economics Group and building theevidence base for policymaking across other areas.
We are a friendlyand supportive team, working in a matrix management style, whereour team members feel valued.
Joining the team isan excellent way of gaining an overview of HMT’s work, building anetwork, and being involved in high-profile Ministerial priorities.
Aboutthe Job
In this role, youwill:
* Be responsible for linemanagement of one Apprentice Economist with a strong focus on staffdevelopment. You will build effective relationships with theproject managers to whom project staff are allocated to ensureexcellent day-to-day management and regular feedback isprovided.
* Scope out and plan analyticalprojects, including by identifying the best analytical techniques,the key outputs, and prioritising work streams with the greatestimpact to improve HMT’s understanding of an issue and inform policyadvice.
* Deliver high quality analyticalprojects at pace, working collaboratively with policy teams acrossHMT and other Government departments. There may also beopportunities to task-manage staff onprojects.
* Communicate the conclusions of theproject to Senior Officials, Ministers, and other partners,influencing the strategic direction of HMTpolicy.
Youwill complete projects lasting around three months that applyanalytical tools and techniques, as well as economic knowledge, tosupport policymaking in line with Ministerial priorities, often atpace.

This role will suit candidateswith excellent analytical and communication skills who are seekinga varied and stretching portfolio of responsibilities, and enjoyworking collaboratively with a range of partners. You will need tobe able to support, develop, and manage one Apprentice Economist ina matrix management structure, be able to build a large networkacross the department and get up to speed on new issuesquickly.
You should also hold an undergraduatedegree in Economics, or have equivalent level workexperience.
