Secondment 12 month contract until 31st March 2026
INTERNAL ONLY (DCC Employees Only)
An exciting role as a family practitioner has arisen for someone with previous experience of whole family working, undertaking early help assessments and chairing Team Around the Family meetings to join the Migration and Resettlement Team, based in the DCC Communities Team. This would be a seconded post and you must have agreement from your line manager before applying.
Background
As part of Devon County Council’s Migration and Resettlement Team, the Community Bridging team was first formed in October 2022 when supporting our Afghan guests that were evacuated from Kabul and had been placed by the Home Office Bridging Hotels in Exeter and Exmouth. These hotels have now closed, and we have supported our guests to find their own homes either here in Devon or further afield in other parts of the country. Once the hotels closed, we were able to evolve, moving into the community, to support families and individuals from ethnically diverse backgrounds who are resettling in Devon, or accommodated here while they await the outcome of their claim for asylum. We work with families and individuals who need support across Devon including those with no recourse to public funds. We offer time-limited assistance and look at areas of people’s lives that they might be finding challenging.
Devon is already a place of sanctuary for many. Our vision within the Migration and Resettlement Team is to ensure that everyone – no matter how they arrived – can live their best life, safe, secure, and where all services are accessible and responsive to their needs and ongoing changes in migration.
An Introduction to the role and key responsibilities
Working to the Community Bridging Team Manager, you will be based at County Hall and working within the community across Devon and hotel(s) for those seeking asylum. You will need to work in partnership with other agencies (e.g. Job Centre Plus, Police, Health, Children Services, Adult services, Home Office & District Council Housing Teams) and respond to enquiries from hotel residents, and those being supported in the community. You will also lead on the completion of an Early Help assessment for each family. You need to be able to work as part of a small team, but also confident in leading on identified projects/activities.
What sorts of skills do you need?
Previous experience of working with families who have multiple and complex needs and a working knowledge of the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults. You should be culturally competent, empathetic and understanding, but at the same time, persistent, tenacious and assertive. An ability to listen and offer practical solutions, an honest approach, and to support and challenge is needed to enable people to make positive changes in their lives. You will need a flexible approach to working hours, as there is a need to work some evenings and weekends.
