The lead will work with sites across the South Wales Trauma Network and they will have strategic links to a wide range of stakeholders. The Wales Trauma Network will have a coordinating responsibility for ensuring the needs are met for all patients with major trauma and this will include:
1. Providing services based around the needs of individuals, irrespective of the geographical location in which their injuries occur.
2. Ensuring patients with major trauma are taken by road or air ambulance as quickly and safely as possible to the hospital that can best manage the definitive care of their injuries either directly or by transfer between hospitals.
3. Supporting patients' families and carers.
4. Providing a comprehensive plan for rehabilitation at a very early stage in the patient pathway.
5. Ensuring best evidence-based practice is embedded within everyday care.
The network will include all providers of trauma care including pre-hospital care, hospital and rehabilitation services.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be responsible for interpreting national and professional guidance on the effective care and treatment of patients who have highly complex conditions and ensuring excellent patient care. The post holder will be responsible for generating research and improving the network's academic profile and impact. The post holder will provide clear outputs to improve delivery of high-quality trauma care across the network. Lead on the development and implementation of policies and procedures that support service improvement across the SWTN and examine appropriate research opportunities that will support network development and to schedule, organise and manage own workload. The role will cover both adult and paediatric major trauma.

* Clinical director for the network.
* Network manager and clinical and managerial leads across the network.
* Network leads for governance, Paediatrics, quality improvement & research, learning and education, rehabilitation and patient flow.
* WAST and EMRTS.
* Commissioning bodies.
* Other organizations (Universities, HEIW, Wales Deanery, emergency planning).
* Specialist Rehabilitation Centers within Wales and UK.
* National Rehabilitation Networks.
* NMTR coordinators.

Planning and Design
The post holder will be accountable for the Rehabilitation Strategy. The Rehabilitation Clinical lead will be expected to collaborate with colleagues across the SWTN to improve patient outcomes and experiences of healthcare interventions in patient care.
* Responsible for the development and appropriate rehabilitation care pathways for patients.
* Use clinical leadership skills to facilitate team working within the multidisciplinary teams, to always ensure effective multidisciplinary working, on occasions this may require conflict resolution skills.
* Promote the development of services and influence strategic direction to assist in delivery of high-quality, cost-effective care and long-term management.
* Identify and learn from all patient safety incidents, demonstrating improvements in practice following policies.
* Ensure that all aspects of clinical governance are addressed.
Communication
Communication with patients:
* Where necessary to communicate with patients and families in relation to follow-up management and support those patients who have utilised the Major Trauma Network in accessing suitable rehabilitation services.
* Where appropriate formulate patient stories/journeys as a therapeutic adjunct and for commissioning processes.
* Attend satellite clinics in all health boards within the network assessing and implementing care. Ensuring the highest quality of care is prescribed and delivered to the patient.
* Provide signposting and advice to patients as required beyond the health board obligations.
* Ensure patient facing information is co-produced and can be published digitally and hard copies are up to date and appropriate.
* To ensure the Rehabilitation prescriptions are issued to patients/families/general practitioners to provide contemporaneous information.
Communication with Colleagues:
* Work collaboratively with colleagues across the South Wales Trauma Network to ensure that positive links are established and maintained to develop the skills and working practices of all services involved in the South Wales Trauma Network.
* Maintain accurate comprehensive and up to date documentation, in line with legal, departmental and professional standards of practice.
* Identify and manage cross network MDTs to support the timely repatriation of complex patients across the network.
* Lead on Hot Debriefs where issues are raised within the network. Lead arbitration and ensure patients concerns and outcomes are the priority. These situations can be difficult to manage so experience in conflict resolution is essential.
* Work with governance leads at Network clinical case review meetings to identify areas of excellence and opportunities for care improvement within rehabilitation to ensure patient functional outcomes are maximised.
Management, Training & Leadership
The post holder will demonstrate leadership including inspiring and sustaining the commitment of colleagues, improving the quality of care for the South Wales Trauma Network through encouraging interdisciplinary and interagency collaboration with professional leads, service managers, and medical consultants.
* The Network Rehabilitation lead will provide expert opinion.
* Develop and lead on the South Wales policy and procedures ensure that they are embedded into the network.
* Take a lead role in formulating strategic plans for Rehabilitation across the South Wales Trauma Network.
* Work across boundaries and in partnership with SWTN colleagues, to support the planning, development and delivery of the Rehabilitation Strategy.
* To develop partnerships with Third sector organizations. In addition, ensuring that the SWTN are proving a high standard of patient care.
* Keep notified of and evaluate national and international developments to ensure that the SWTN is aspiring to meet best practice.
