JOB PURPOSE
Art and Design are particularly cherished subjects at St John’s; being both extremely well taught and greatly enjoyed by our pupils. The Head of Art and Design is responsible for the continuation and further development of its role in the curriculum.
The Department is a highly creative space where the pupils are able to work in a variety of art disciplines. The scheduled time for Art and Design in the Upper School (Years 6-8) was recently increased to 2 x 50 minute lessons per week, as part of the school’s drive to develop creativity in the curriculum. The pupils are given the opportunity to experiment with a range of resources and are introduced to a diverse array of artists, materials and techniques. The Head of Art and Design liaises closely with the Director of Studies and other Heads of Department to monitor and develop the curriculum, including rigorous assessment procedures in preparation for 13+ scholarships.
The Head of Art and Design will contribute also to the wider life of the school, including participation in extra-curricular activities.

Role Overview:
:
· To teach Art and Design in the School from Years 3 to Year 8, exposing the pupils to a variety of art disciplines and media.
· To be a Form Tutor to an Upper School year group, supported by the Head of Upper School.
· To have oversight of Art and Design Teaching in all year groups, including Pre-Prep.
• To set the standard of teaching and assessment within the Art and Design Department.
• To liaise with secondary schools regarding future pupil’s entrance criteria and particularly those preparing for scholarships.
• To deliver school assemblies on a spiritual/artistic theme as and when invited to do so by the Headteacher.
• To lead and develop whole department policies and risk assessments.
• To support in the organisation and delivery of activities and workshops for STEAM week and events.
• To support fully the School’s aim to provide a relevant and stimulating syllabus that will engage and motivate all pupils.
• To support fully the life of a Roman Catholic school through organizing subject assemblies and other events that will occur throughout the academic year.
• To share supervisory duties at morning and lunch break and at the end of the day on a rota basis.
• Ensure that the health and safety arrangements for your department are compliant with current legislation and good practice.
• To contribute to the implementation of School policies and procedures.
• To manage the departmental budget effectively, ensuring the Art and Design department is well resourced.
• To help to organise inter-school events and competitions that enable all pupils, including gifted and talented pupils, to demonstrate their ability in the subject.
• To provide parents with timely and accurate information on their child’s progress. This would include preparing school reports and attendance at all appropriate Parents’ Evenings.
• To maintain and uphold the highest standards of behaviour from all pupils.
Other Duties:
· Support school events (e.g. Sports Days, Open Days), including occasional weekends and attend all inset days and new staff induction training.
· Always promote safeguarding and the welfare of the children in the school's care, in accordance with the school’s safeguarding policies.
· Be conversant with and adhere to the school’s Child Protection & Safeguarding, First Aid and Data Protection policies.
· Uphold the ethos and values of St John’s Beaumont School.
· Undertake additional training for the better performance of duties.
· Any other reasonable task as directed by the Headteacher.
