Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work
Salon operations:
* Keeping up to date with new collections within The Cutting Company and the hairdressing industry
* Keep fire exits clear
* Perform skin testing before chemical services and record appropriately
* Wearing required personal protective equipment and other health and safety procedures
* Assisting stylists with preparing clients for and during the service being provided, this may include neutralising, removing colours and blow-drying hair under supervision if required
* Housekeeping, keeping salon tidy, and reflecting The Cutting Company brand principles
Other duties
* Keeping a positive salon atmosphere
* Promoting ‘The Cutting Company’ and its brand principles.
* Attend salon activities in and out of the salon
* Recognised team member with a valued contribution to the salon
Training:
* Attend all in-salon assessment and training days and participate in periodic training reviews
* Complete courses offered within The Cutting Company, NVQ levels and complete all project work and tests set by assessors and instructors in an agreed timeframe
* Adhere to information received during training
* Demonstrating learning to the team, new assistants and guests
* Providing suitable training models when requested and having them on call if needed
* Sitting in and observing as many consultations and haircuts as possible with various stylists and recording in your CPD folder. A minimum of 1 per day is required. This is especially beneficial with a new client! Only this will help to expand your knowledge of ‘hairdressing vocabulary’
* Keep your one file up to date with journal entries and photo evidence
* Take before and after pictures of every practical hairdressing task you do, whether this is on a block or a client. This is to be saved in a named file on our iPad and should be kept up to date weekly to produce as evidence at any given time
Salary:
Apprentices will receive the national apprentice minimum wage for their hours worked. Once they are able to apply colours in the salon, they will receive a commission for those done correctly. Apprentices aged 19 or above in their second year will receive the national minimum wage for their age

* Adhere to legal and organisational requirements for the safe use of products, tools, materials and equipment.
* Apply safe, hygienic, and effective methods of working and infection control, while completing hairdressing services.
* Use communication and etiquette that meets industry requirements, suits and is appropriate to the organisation.
* Maintain the client’s confidentiality and comfort (modesty, privacy) at the start and during the service.
* Advise clients (new and regular) pre, during and after service on the maintenance of the look, complementary services and retail products available in the salon.
* Promote yourself, your organisation, products and services via a variety of social channels.
* Carry out wider salon duties to support the salon business (e.g. services, bookings, payments, retail, upselling and sales).
* Use a range of products, tools, equipment used in Hairdressing services in accordance with legal organisational requirements.
* Complete and maintain client records in accordance with legal and organisational requirements.
* Work as part of a team to support the salon businesses.
* Use working methods that promote environmental and sustainable working practices.
* Carry out a consultation, examine and analyse the hair, skin and scalp and complete relevant industry tests (e.g. hair classification type and characteristics tests).

* Cut hair using a range of technical skills and cutting techniques to create a range of looks, considering weight distribution, cutting angles, balance and degree of graduation, and the natural growth patterns of the hair, length of the hair ( club cutting, scissor over comb, clipper over comb, texturising, freehand, thinning, layering and razor cutting).
* Restyle hair to create a personalised short or medium (above the shoulder) length hair cut, changing the shape, length and style hair using a range of cutting techniques.
* Complete a range of hair colouring and lightening services to change the depth and tone using current colouring techniques (e.g. freehand techniques, woven highlights or lowlights, root re-touch, half head and full head application, temporary, semi-permanent, demi- permanent, quasi-permanent, permanent colour and lighteners).
* Evaluate the results of the service.

Your training plan
To be eligible for this apprenticeship, you must meet the following residency criteria: You must have lived in the UK, the British Overseas Territories, or Crown Dependencies (Channel Islands and Isle of Man) for at least three years before the start of the apprenticeship.
