Principal Flood Risk & Drainage Engineer
AWP is an award-winning regional consultancy, providing specialist development planning and infrastructure services to the property industry. We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced person to join our Flood Risk & Drainage team, at a salary and grade reflective of capabilities, to support our growing workload in 2023.
Who are we looking for?
We are keen to speak to people with experience in flood risk and drainage strategy and design, and working as part of a wider team of professionals, to help deliver schemes through the planning process. Your current job title is not so important, but you are likely to have been a graduate in a related subject, and gained a number of years’ experience already working in the industry during which time you will have gained comprehensive knowledge of the Flood Risk Assessment process and all that entails. Above all though we would like to hear from people with a passion for what they do.
What can you expect from the role?
You can expect to work on a wide variety of projects across all sectors around the south-west region and further afield. To give you a flavour, we are currently working on:
1. Major mixed-use urban extensions in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset.
2. City Centre regeneration schemes in Plymouth, Exeter and Bristol.
3. Delivery of new employment land in Mid Devon and Teignbridge.
4. Leisure and tourism schemes in Devon and Dorset.
5. Renewable energy and battery storage facilities across the south west.
6. New retirement accommodation at sites across the UK.
7. Affordable housing and local employment sites to support the rural economy at various sites across the region.
We are looking for somebody with sufficient experience to lead the flood risk and drainage input on projects like these, with support from senior colleagues and our wider team of civil engineers and technicians. You would also work closely with colleagues in AWP’s Transport Planning and Development Infrastructure teams, collaborating to deliver for our clients in line with agreed program and budgets.
With one eye on the future, we are seeking a colleague who can see themselves growing their career with us over the long-term, and a desire to step up to take on greater management and leadership responsibilities of the Flood Risk and Drainage team over time.
What would it be like working for AWP?
AWP has a team of over 40 engineers, transport planners and technicians, and we believe this makes us the largest team specialising in our field of the industry operating in the region. We all have ties with Devon and the Exeter area, and we are very proud to be a part of the dynamic community in the city.
The south-west region is a beautiful and truly wonderful place to live and work. The main urban hubs of Exeter, Plymouth and Bristol are all university cities, with vibrant cultural and leisure scenes. However, the peninsular is also home to some of the most diverse and spectacular countryside, including the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks, South Hams and East Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, and some world-famous surfing beaches on the North Devon and North Cornwall Coast.
We have office premises at Pynes Hill, which has easy access to local residential areas by foot, the Exeter wide cycle network, as well as bus and rail links into the city centre and out into East Devon. It is also very handy for the M5 and A30.
Our office has desk space for everybody, as well as numerous meeting rooms and break-out space for collaboration with colleagues. However, we are also embracing the opportunities of agile Hybrid Working and the advantages that can offer in terms of work-life balance, and we are fully set up for remote home working as well.
AWP is a partnership as the name suggests, and we take pride in sharing our success with everybody that has contributed towards it. That’s why everybody at AWP qualifies for our quarterly profit-related bonus scheme, and we think that’s pretty unique in our industry.
Other benefits available working at AWP include:
1. ICE accredited training scheme, and support for professional qualifications through IEng and CEng.
2. AWP contributions into Group Personal Pension.
3. Membership of the AWP Group Health Scheme.
4. Benefiz Flexi Pot; to spend on other company benefits such as the cycle purchase scheme, medical screening services, additional life/health insurance, Gym-flex membership etc.
5. 2 x Annual subscriptions for professional institutions.
What do others say?
In 2022 we were thrilled to hear the news that we had been awarded Investors in People Gold status once again, extending our accreditation to 2025. Commenting in their report the IIP Practitioner said that:
“Retaining Gold, improving on practice and achieving such fantastic feedback is a brilliant achievement…. Your overall benchmark score on the survey has gone up since 2019, and you are above the national IIP benchmark.”
“It was a pleasure to speak with members of your team who are so committed to supporting clients and delivering value for money on projects. People clearly bring a lot of expertise, energy and passion to their role.”
“AWP remains one of the strongest organisations I’ve had the pleasure to work with in relation to supporting people’s career, and encouraging them to learn new skills and achieve ICE qualification status.”
