The Role:
This role is to work within the tax department initially providing support to the current tax advisors. You will study alongside your work for the technician tax qualification ATT – Association of Taxation Technicians. Initially you will be supervised and supported by the department’s tax advisors, as you learn more about tax. As experience, knowledge and confidence grows it is expected that you will be able to undertake further tax related duties, and following qualification to ATT you should expect to take on and manage your own portfolio of clients alongside your colleagues, becoming a key part of the tax department.
Further support may be provided to further your studies by working towards the highly respected CTA qualification – Chartered Tax Advisor.
You will gain significant experience and knowledge of personal taxation including income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax. You will also become familiar with trust taxation, trust accounts and the trust registration service. You will gain a simple understanding of company taxation, VAT and National insurance.
Job Responsibilities
* To provide administrative support across the tax department, preparing engagement letters, tracking new client onboarding, handling some aspects of professional engagement.
* Entering transactions for capital gains tax computations, reviewing computations and adjusting as appropriate. Merging portfolios to ensure capital gains tax is reported correctly.
* Preparing bank reconciliations for trust tax clients and some self-employed clients.
* Preparing simple sets of accounts for trusts and self-employed clients.
* Obtaining and reviewing trust registration service records, preparing and filing trust registration service records as required by MLD5.
* Undertaking research of tax legislation, HMRC manuals and other tax commentaries and case law for current positions in relation to tax treatment.
* Speaking to clients on behalf of the tax advisors, taking instructions and booking in meetings.
* Speaking to HMRC on behalf of the tax advisors and taking information.
* Maintaining client files and records.
* Preparing tax fee notes.
* Preparing cash forms and liaising with investment managers and our cash team regarding settlement of clients’ tax liabilities and fee notes.
* Providing tax support to investment management and operations regarding the tax treatment of investments, and other investment management client tax queries.
* Providing capital gains tax computations to investment managers where required.
* Maintaining tax spreadsheets for tax due, completion of tax returns, inheritance tax 10-year records and trust registration service records.
* Any other duties in line within the level and scope of this role.
* Adhere to Consumer Duty.
Skill and Experience Requirements
* Must have gained GCSE in English and Maths.
* Excellent verbal and written communication.
* Have excellent attention to detail and a careful and thorough approach to work.
* Able to work to tight deadlines and prepared to work extra hours where needed.
* Able to work independently and use your initiative.
* Able to work collaboratively as part of a team and support your colleagues where required.
* Inquisitive and a problem-solver with a keen eye for detail.
* Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel essential.
* A desire to work within the tax industry, an interest in tax legislation and a willingness to study hard to gain your ATT qualification.
