LSTM has created a new role for a Health & Safety Advisor to enhance the safety of staff, students, visitors, and contractors by providing expert guidance on health, safety, and biological management systems. The postholder will work closely with Senior Managers, Principal Investigators, and laboratory teams to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, particularly in relation to biological and chemical safety, as well as adherence to Specified Animal Pathogens Orders (SAPO) legislation.
The postholder will be responsible for conducting inspections, developing risk assessments, and delivering health and safety training while supporting LSTM’s overall statutory requirements. This role requires the postholder to work across various environments, including laboratories, insectaries, and in vivo rooms, to maintain high-quality health and safety standards.
Key responsibilities will include:
* Providing professional and proactive safety advice across a full range of health and safety matters, ensuring compliance with regulations.
* Conducting inspections across LSTM facilities and spaces, finalizing reports with the Health and Safety Administrator and recommending improvements.
* Working closely with the Containment Level 3 (CL3) Laboratory Manager to ensure compliance with the Code of Practice in all CL3 laboratories and insectaries.
* Advising on risk assessments, Standard Operating Procedures, and other safety documentation, particularly for Containment Level 2 (CL2) laboratories and in vivo facilities.
* Participating in key committees, including the Health and Safety Oversight Committee, Biological Safety Committee, and Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body, contributing to decision-making.
* Leading and contributing to working groups developing and reviewing health and safety arrangements, including risk assessments, policies, and guidance.
* Investigating and analysing incidents, accidents, and near misses, preparing reports with recommendations, while acting as a point of contact for external regulatory bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive and the Environment Agency.
* Implementing and monitoring health and safety risk management systems, ensuring statutory compliance and effectively communicating key information to users and Principal Investigators.
Training and Development
* Designing and delivering toolbox talks, induction sessions, and training in collaboration with the Head of Health and Safety and the Laboratory and Research Facilities Manager.
* Identifying and coordinating external training provisions, such as manual handling and gas cylinder training.
Networking and Compliance
* Liaising with external regulatory bodies, including the Health and Safety Executive, Local Authority, and the Environment Agency.
* Representing LSTM at relevant meetings and forums to ensure compliance and promote safety.
* Attending external safety meetings and conferences for benchmarking and best practice sharing.
Qualifications and Skills:
* Degree in a relevant scientific subject.
* NEBOSH General Certificate or other Level 3 Health & Safety qualification and Biosafety Level 1 Practitioner.
* Experience working in a scientific laboratory.
* Experience in a health and safety role within a scientific department or complex organization.
* Experience in writing reports.
* Experience in designing and delivering training.
* Experience in developing and implementing health and safety management systems.
