Are you excited about maintaining beautiful outdoor spaces and ensuring safety for all? We're looking for a dedicated Gardener to join our team and keep our University campus in pristine condition.
As our new Gardener, you will collaborate with the Head Gardener on the maintenance, care, and management of gardens and outdoor spaces. Your excellent knowledge of horticulture will ensure that all plants are watered, fed, and pruned according to their growth cycles and seasons. This role requires sensitivity to the age and versatility of our Estate to maintain the health and appearance of the gardens.
In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining the roads, pathways, signage, lawns, garden borders, and woodlands to the highest standards. You will skilfully operate a variety of grounds maintenance equipment, ensuring the campus remains free of litter and promptly addressing seasonal hazards like leaves, snow, and ice. Following maintenance schedules as directed by the Head Gardener, you will complete tasks efficiently, effectively, and on time. Additionally, you will prepare and maintain grounds for University events and Open Days, while participating in projects to promote biodiversity and environmental stewardship.
Enhancing the campus with new flowers, trees, and shrubs, you will regularly water plants and lawns to ensure healthy growth. Implementing measures to protect plant health, you will also prune trees and shrubs for optimal health and aesthetics. Keeping accurate records of all gardening and maintenance activities, you will work closely with the wider maintenance team to ensure a cohesive and efficient approach.
We are looking for candidates with a good standard of general education, such as GCSEs or equivalent. Essential qualifications include experience in grounds maintenance within commercial gardens, knowledge of tree and shrub maintenance, and basic amenity horticulture. You will need to be hard-working with a flexible, adaptable approach to work and be physically fit to meet the job's demands. Experience operating a wide range of horticultural machinery and hand tools, along with proven experience in developing and maintaining gardens to a high standard, is also essential.
