The opportunity:
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Tax Consultant to join the Markel Tax team. Markel Tax is a leading provider of fee protection insurance and tax consultancy services in the UK. Collaborating with over 2,500 accountancy practices, we are dedicated to supporting growth and safeguarding clients’ interests.
Our dynamic team of 60+ professionals is part of the broader Markel UK family, combining nimbleness and innovation with the strength of corporate backing.
We are looking to recruit a highly motivated and well-organised individual to work within the Tax Investigations Team. This exciting role is extremely varied and gives the successful candidate an opportunity to utilise and build on their knowledge base.
What you’ll be doing:
* Provide specialist verbal and written tax investigations advice and support to a range of clients including accountants, professionals, business owners and individuals.
* Assist with the application of complex, specialist technical advice to provide innovative solutions that contribute to the client.
* Assist with a range of advanced compliance matters, deal with HM Revenue & Customs enquiries and review technical correspondence, guidance and legislation.
* Leverage relationships, technology and social media to build a profile with both existing clients and a wider network of professional contacts, raising the profile of Markel Tax to promote our expertise.
* Utilise your existing abilities and experience to develop and build a niche area of interest and knowledge within the team to expand the range of technical expertise.
* Engage with the wider business to build knowledge and awareness of all aspects of our service offering to help identify cross-sell opportunities and assist with marketing initiatives.
* Support business development actions and initiatives as required and provide relevant technical commentary and content aligned with business priorities.
* Be pro-active and find opportunities to act on the interpretation of new legislation with a view to winning new work.
* Build strong working relationships and support a team culture of collaboration, knowledge sharing and technical debate to achieve team goals.
* Act with honesty and integrity in all dealings with clients, contacts and team members whilst respecting confidentiality and building trust.
Our must haves:
* HMRC background is essential.
* Good understanding of accounts and bookkeeping.
* Specialist knowledge of tax enquiries, information powers, penalties, discovery legislation, and the Taxes Management Act.
* Management of enquiries into personal tax returns.
* Management of enquiries into partnership tax returns.
* Management of enquiries into corporation tax returns.
* Knowledge and experience of making disclosures to HMRC using the Let Property Campaign & Worldwide Disclosure Facility.
* A clear understanding and experience of HMRC processes such as Statutory Review, Alternative Dispute Resolution and appealing to the Tribunals Service.
* Knowledge of dealing with enquiries handled by HMRC’s Counter Avoidance & Fraud Investigation Teams would be an asset.
* An understanding of specific areas of tax including payroll, residency, capital gains reliefs and losses would be helpful.
* Ability to research technical tax issues is essential.
* Business development and marketing of tax services.
* Great teammate who is able to collaborate with others to achieve positive results.
