Start Date: ASAP Days & Hours: Monday to Thursday 7.30 am to 10.00 am & Saturday 1.00 pm to 6.00 pm Recruiter: Rachael (url removed) About this client/child: Peter is a fun-loving young man who adores all things sensory, especially music (of all genres), light-up toys, and tactile experiences. He enjoys cuddles and companionship, often wanting someone to sit with him on the sofa. Peter has a genetic disorder causing global developmental delay. He is non-verbal and primarily communicates through sounds, noises, and body language, though he understands some basic signs and situational commands. Building a strong relationship with him will help in interpreting his communication cues. Peter is a full-time wheelchair user but can weight-bear and uses a stander for daily exercise. He requires full assistance with personal care, dressing, undressing, showering, and toileting. While he wears pads due to occasional accidents, he also uses the toilet. Peter loves food—especially cake He eats and drinks independently but requires hand-over-hand support. He has epilepsy, experiencing tonic-clonic seizures several times a week, mostly at night. Although he is on medication, seizures still occur. Overview of role: Peter attends a local special needs school from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. During the weekdays, the Professional Support Worker / PA will assist with Peter’s full morning routine. This will involve: Waking him up and assisting with all aspects of personal care, preparing his breakfast (usually porridge with mixed fruit), taking him to school using the family car, which has a swivel seat for easier transfers. Due to the side effects of Peter’s epilepsy medication, he is prone to oversleeping, often making him late for school. The school is aware and has made special allowances for him. Once Peter is dropped off at school, this is where your shift ends. If Peter is unwell or has had a bad seizure during the night, he will need time to recover and won’t be able to attend school. On these occasions, additional hours up until 1:00 pm may be available, but this is optional if you have other commitments. On Saturdays and during school holidays, this is a great opportunity to engage Peter in activities in the community. He loves: People-watching at the supermarket – a great sensory experience for him, using his stander and doing stretching exercises (encouragement needed), arts and crafts if he is not too tired, listening to music or relaxing in his easy chair or spending time outdoors in the garden. If he is tired, he may have a nap on the sofa to recharge. The hourly rate offered is up to £20.00 on weekdays and up to £22.00 on weekends (gross), depending on experience. Who this job would suit: Peter is a gentle young man, with no behaviours that may challenge; he can be rather passive, so he needs someone with energy and motivation to help engage him in activities. If he has a tummy ache, he may be VERY vocal, so you will need to be tolerable to noise. The Professional Support Worker / PA will perform manual handling, such as supporting transfers from chair to toilet or from wheelchair to car seat so you should be physically fit. What’s great about this job: This is a family well known to Snap Care and positive feedback from candidates has always been received. A great working environment with a supportive family.
