Introducing our new Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit and our Acute Assessment Unit (AAU).
We are thrilled to announce the opening of our new purpose SDEC unit in the spring of 2025, alongside the rebranding of our Emergency Floor as an AAU.
These units are designed to enhance patient care and streamline emergency services. Their function is to provide quick, efficient and effective care to patients in urgent need of medical attention.
SDEC: Our SDEC allows patients to be assessed, diagnosed and treated all within the same day, minimizing hospital admissions and ensuring fast, high quality care.
AAU: Currently known as the Emergency Floor, the AAU offers an immediate and thorough evaluation of acutely ill patients, allowing us to quickly identify needs and create an individual plan of care.

Main duties of the job
This role provides vital support in maintaining smooth and efficient operations, assisting with patient transport, equipment management and ensuring a clean, safe environment. The role is essential for facilitating timely patient care and supporting the healthcare team with non-clinical tasks that contribute to a well-organised, patient centred setting.
Job responsibilities
* Transport patients safely to and from the SDEC unit, other hospital departments or diagnostics areas, using wheelchairs or trolleys.
* Assist with the safe transfer of patients within the SDEC unit, ensuring they are comfortable and in the appropriate location for assessments and treatments.
* Ensure necessary equipment, such as mobility aids and medical devices are available and in working order.
* Clean and sanitize transport equipment after each patient use, adhering to infection control protocols.
* Ensure that patient areas and communal areas within the SDEC are kept tidy and free of obstacles, maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.
* Offer assistance to patients and their families by providing directions and answering general questions.
* Transport specimens to and from the lab for testing, ensuring they arrive quickly and are handled with care to avoid delay in diagnosis or treatment.
* Provide general assistance to nursing and clinical staff as needed, helping with non-clinical tasks that support patient flow and efficiency within the unit.
* Follow all health and safety guidelines, ensuring patient, staff and self-safety during transport and while performing other tasks.
Person Specification
Experience/Qualifications
* Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
* Experience working in a busy, high demand environment.
* Ability to follow instructions and understand health and safety protocols.
* Experience in customer service awareness.
* Relevant experience in a healthcare setting or other public facing environment.
* Experience working for the NHS.
* Prior experience as a porter or general assistant.
Communication Skills
* Able to communicate clearly and courteously with patients, families and healthcare staff.
* Comfortable answering questions and providing basic information to patients and families in a friendly and supportive manner.
Planning and Organisational Skills
* Strong ability to manage time effectively, balancing multiple tasks and priorities, to support the smooth flow of the SDEC.
* Capability to maintain organised, clean and well-stocked environments, ensuring readiness for patient care.
Physical skills
* Able to carry out full range of physical requirements of the role.
* Manual handling/patient transfer competencies and techniques.
* Kind, patient centred approach with a genuine desire to support patients.
