Senior FPGA Design Engineer
Up to £50,000 (depending on experience)
Wotton under Edge/ Hybrid working (office based 3 days a week)
Renishaw’s Encoder Products Division (EPD) designs and supplies cutting-edge position feedback technology to the world’s precision measurement, automation, and manufacturing industries. It is highly likely that something you own contains a part or device that was manufactured with the help of one of Renishaw’s encoder products.
EPD is made up of engineers, scientists and technicians all working together to produce market leading products for sale around the world. We start with cutting edge optical, algorithm and circuit design, developing our own ASICs and sensors where required; we then use innovative mechanical engineering to turn our core technology into a range of desirable products for our broad customer base.
Working closely with colleagues in our manufacturing division, we develop manufacturing and assembly processes and software to deliver quality products by the hundreds of thousands that in turn, perform reliably and repeatedly to sub-micron accuracies for our customers.
A position has become available for a Senior FPGA Design Engineer to join a talented multi-disciplined team in EPD. The primary focus will be in digital logic design for FPGAs but a sound appreciation of all aspects of high-speed design (both analogue and digital) is essential. There will also be a need to interact with and mentor other engineers, graduates and apprentices within the group.
There will be opportunities to be involved in research and development projects which will put the successful candidate at the forefront of new product design.
Responsibilities
1. Drive the development of new precision measurement products, working with project managers and product managers to define agreed product specifications and deliver designs to meet those specifications.
2. Work within a multi-disciplined team to assist with the optimisation and the interaction between Electronic, Mechanical and Software components in all designs, whilst gaining an appreciation of metrology (the science of measurement).
3. Deliver designs that meet targets for product performance, quality, cost and timescale and which are suitable for transfer to production, considering design for assembly and test.
4. Understand and comply with the company’s new product introduction process, working with cross-functional teams to optimise the release of new designs to production.
5. Work on multiple projects simultaneously and allocate time appropriately, in collaboration with the project manager, in order to meet deadlines for delivery.
6. Keep abreast of current technology and develop innovative processes and design solutions which can be patented by the company.
Key requirements
1. Degree in electronic engineering, physics or similar.
2. Advanced knowledge of VHDL – Ideally including recent experience with Intel (Altera) FPGAs.
3. Demonstrable expertise in electronic design including high speed, low power circuits and electromagnetic compatibility; capable in both analogue and digital domains.
4. Demonstrable skills and experience with Altium, CR5000 or other ECAD system tools.
5. Practical understanding of microcontrollers, embedded software and signal processing techniques.
Desirable requirements
1. Knowledge of C, C++, assembly or other embedded software.
2. Experience of LT SPICE, Matlab, Simulink, VUnit, Python, Aldec ActiveHDL and Intel (Altera) Quartus.
3. Knowledge and experience of safety and reliability standards including IEC61508.
Person specification
The successful applicant will have an excellent understanding of electronic fundamentals, an enquiring mind and be open to discussing new developments, provide support to other staff and be enthusiastic and knowledgeable in developing new products for this exciting area.
