The Role
Reporting directly to the Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor, in this role, you will provide strategic direction for the Faculty to ensure delivery of key objectives outlined in the University Education and Student Experience Plan. In partnership with Faculty staff, Student Services and Undeb Aber, you will foster an inclusive learning environment that supports wellbeing and enables our students to achieve their goals. You will oversee design and delivery of curriculum developments, supporting regular monitoring and review of provision and facilitating cross-Faculty and University-wide interdisciplinary collaboration. As Employability lead for the Faculty, you will collaborate with academic units and PAU Careers Service to develop a contemporary skills portfolio and ensure employability engagement is embedded throughout the student journey. You will work closely with your counterpart in the Faculty of Humanities, with Faculty academic units and Academic Registry colleagues to ensure consistent and robust application of policies and procedures that align with compliance and quality assurance requirements. You will support a culture of continuing professional development relating to pedagogy and student support within the Faculty. As a member of the Faculty Executive Committee, you will be expected to make a wider contribution to leadership and management beyond your direct portfolio.
What you’ll do
* Lead the ongoing development of an inclusive learning and teaching culture that supports and enhances student experience and wellbeing;
* Develop the learning and teaching profile of the Faculty, supporting staff to engage with key directions outlined in the Education and Student Experience Plan. These include the development of a contemporary skills portfolio and strengthening the links between academic research and education;
* Work collaboratively to facilitate interdisciplinary activities across Departments, Faculties and the whole University that enhance staff and student engagement;
* Actively support Faculty staff with teaching awards and grants, both internal and external, and promote the scholarship of learning and teaching;
* Work closely with relevant Departments across the University, and actively support academic staff and coordinators of academic activity (modules, courses, programmes) to engage with processes of continuous improvement, using data from relevant quality indicators and peer review of teaching;
* Mentor and/or arrange mentoring for Faculty staff in relation to best practice in learning and teaching and facilitate processes for peer review teaching within the Faculty;
* Support active engagement with quality indicators for learning and teaching data and initiatives, including Student Experience Survey, Tell Us Now, National Student Survey, Teaching Excellence Framework and the Student Success Plan to engage staff in continuous improvement of learning and teaching;
* In collaboration with course teams, lead and manage the focus on the student learning experience including issues of student retention and learning success; actively support the Faculty focus on student learning and transitions;
* Ensure support for appropriate staff development particularly for new and sessional staff;
* Facilitate Faculty involvement in institution-wide activities over the student lifecycle, such as Welcome Week and careers activities;
* Actively promote appropriate professional learning opportunities and strategic institution-wide activities including active engagement with learning and teaching working and advisory groups and colleagues responsible for learning technologies and spaces;
* Promote the scholarship of learning, teaching and student experience and make a personal contribution to research and/or professional activities in relation to learning, teaching and student experience in higher education;
* Provide appropriate support on relevant issues concerning student welfare;
* Keep abreast of sector developments and bring new ideas to the University;
* Support the development of Welsh-medium scholarship and research, in alignment with University and Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol targets together with the relevant Assistant Pro Vice-Chancellors;
* In collaboration with the other APVCs, embed the Welsh language within the Faculty; be committed to the principles of promoting a bilingual culture within the University; and understand how the Welsh Language Standards are applied within the responsibilities of the post;
* To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post;

* To be committed to your own development and that of your staff through the effective use of the University’s Effective Contribution Scheme;
* Any other duties reasonably requested.
Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required
Essential
1. An advanced degree (PhD or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline
2. A strong academic track record in a related discipline in the Faculty
3. Demonstrable evidence of leadership and management within higher education
4. Experience in leading successful collaborations
5. Effective and persuasive communication skills with the ability to build strong relationships with staff at all levels
6. Ability to act decisively and with good judgement
7. Ability to operate at a strategic level, whilst demonstrating a pragmatic approach to operational needs and priorities
8. Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level B1*, or evidence to demonstrate an on-going commitment to learn Welsh to this level.
Desirable
1. Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level C1.*
