•Evaluates, maintains, repairs, and optimizes mobile radio, portable radio, vehicular repeater, lighting, siren, speed-determining, in-vehicle camera, mobile data, and other communications equipment.
•Evaluates, optimizes, and repairs public safety equipment and components installed in vehicles.
•Maintains workspace including, inventory shelves, and work benches.
•Maintains test equipment.
•Designs, fabricates, and documents approved equipment modifications or subassemblies for new equipment installations.
•Completes required documentation of position including, but not limited to: Work/Leave Report (SP-106), Equipment Maintenance Reports, Asset Management and Configuration Management.
•Conducts training and assists field technician personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
•Working knowledge in digital and analog electronics; in radio frequency [very high frequency (VHF), ultrahigh frequency (UHF), 700MHz, 800MHz] operational theory; and in computers and peripheral equipment.
•Skill in the use of computers and related radio programming software (Motorola, Harris, EF Johnson, Kenwood); in hand and power tools; in Microsoft Office applications; and in soldering (Surface Mounted technology and Lead-Free soldering).
•Demonstrated ability to interpret electronic schematic drawings; to evaluate, install, maintain, and repair public safety and communication equipment; to conduct training and assist field technician personnel; to communicate effectively in English orally and in writing with staff and agency officials; and to work independently and as a member of a team.
•High school graduate or equivalent.
•Possession of a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Radiotelephone Operators License or recognized equivalent within six months of employment required.
•Valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
Additional Considerations
•Formal military or civilian trade school preferred.
•Experience with various Public Safety equipment including two-way mobile/portable communications equipment (transmitters, receivers, transceivers, digital vehicle repeaters), electronic sirens, electronic emergency lighting, speed-detection devices preferred.
