About this opportunity
The Digital Service Engineering Platform team is at the sharp end of running and managing our existing and new internet banking platforms as we re-engineer customer journeys to GCP.
As an SRE within the Digital Service Engineering team, you’ll be an active and leading member of a focused team of engineers working on the Group’s flagship Internet Banking platform to run and maintain a set of core customer journeys running on GCP.
We aim to provide our customers with a seamless user experience, and you'll be a key part of the team to build that reliability into our service. Someone with a passion for technology and how it can be optimized and used for our colleagues and customers is essential.
While it would be great if you had an SRE background, we know this role may also suit people from a DevOps or Infrastructure Operations background. As long as you have the transferable skills, approach, and enthusiasm, you are what we're looking for.
A genuine interest in automation and how it can be adopted into the pipeline would be beneficial, as well as research in wider industry trends.
We need you to work in a highly collaborative way, working closely with software engineers, quality engineers, infrastructure engineers, and security engineers.
We'd like you to be adaptable, able to use and learn new skills and knowledge in varying circumstances, and comfortable providing recommendations and thought leadership using your own judgment.
Versatile communication style to converse technically with customers and consumers (with varying levels of technical background including Product, Engineering, Senior Management, and other Domain experts).
You'll also want to bring others on the journey, able to provide education and mentorship covering multiple DevOps and site reliability topics to support different teams and drive upskilling.
What will I be doing?
* Monitoring & Alerting: implementing continued enhancements to drive improvements for MTTD and MTTR.
* Automating Release Management: automating (CI/CD), integrating, and automating non-functional testing to accelerate deployment frequency and lead time.
* Operational Service: part of production support rota alongside 24x7 shift and Lab development engineers, contributing to blameless post-mortems and implementing root cause fixes.
* Automating Toil: remove the manual tasks required to operate the product.
What you’ll need
* Experience of working in a front-line Production support/operations environment, working cross-functionally during incidents.
* Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code i.e. Terraform, Chef, Ansible.
* Ability to write Standards, Policies, Designs, and other such collateral.
* Building CI/CD pipelines to deliver changes incrementally to production.
* Day-to-day administration of Deploy and Release lifecycle activities.
* Strong familiarity with source code repositories, particularly Git.
* Experience of build and deployment tools, e.g., Maven/Gradle, Jenkins2/Circle CI, Harness.IO, Nexus, Sonar.
* Cloud technologies such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and OpenShift.
* Containers, orchestration, and service mesh, e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, Istio.
* Exposure to networks such as F5 and Firewalls.
Our focus is to ensure we're inclusive every day, building an organisation that reflects modern society and celebrates diversity in all its forms.
We want our people to feel that they belong and can be their best, regardless of background, identity, or culture.
We were one of the first major organisations to set goals on diversity in senior roles, create a menopause health package, and a dedicated Working with Cancer initiative.
And it’s why we especially welcome applications from underrepresented groups.
We’re disability confident. So if you’d like reasonable adjustments to be made to our recruitment processes, just let us know.
We also offer a wide-ranging benefits package, which includes:
* A generous pension contribution of up to 15%.
* An annual performance-related bonus.
* Share schemes including free shares.
* Benefits you can adapt to your lifestyle, such as discounted shopping.
* 30 days’ holiday, with bank holidays on top.
* A range of wellbeing initiatives and generous parental leave policies.
