Job Summary
As the Principal Sonographer you will be responsible for managing all aspects of the ultrasound service provided at North Manchester General Hospital, leading a team of sonographers and radiology department assistants. Supervising senior and junior staff to ensure a high-quality imaging service is consistently provided across the department. Liaise with other clinicians in other departments to promote good teamwork across departments and directorates and keep up to date with any service developments that may affect Imaging.
Provide guidance and advice to Sonographers who are new to the department and to ensure that new staff have completed all the necessary induction and training to perform the necessary level of competence. Identify any staff who are not performing at the required level and put in place action plans to ensure that staff are supported appropriately. The preceptorship lead role involves managing newly qualified sonographers across all MFT sites; providing support for both preceptee and preceptor throughout the process. To report to the Divisional Modality Lead in Ultrasound as required.
Duties include management of the department, collaborative production of staff rotas to ensure all services are covered, and completion of monthly attendance sheets, including calculations and checks. Support the wider department in management tasks as appropriate/delegated by the Directorate Manager.
Main Duties of the Job
Manchester University Hospital Foundation Trust (MFT) is the leading Trust for teaching, research, and tertiary specialist services in the Northwest of England. This post is open for all experienced Sonographers and will be based at North Manchester General Hospital with a requirement to attend other MFT ultrasound sites as necessary.
Across our site we have new Siemens Redwood and Sequoia ultrasound machines. We offer a high quality and specialized service in obstetric, gynaecological, abdominal, musculoskeletal, neck and scrotal ultrasound scans. Providing an efficient ultrasound service and a welcoming atmosphere for patients, you'll be a vital member of a team of dedicated sonographers who work together to deliver the best possible service and patient care.
To succeed, you'll need proven ultrasound experience and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of patients and carers. Flexibility in your approach to work is essential. Working as part of a dynamic team you will have opportunities to provide teaching and mentoring with the support of our Clinical Tutor in Ultrasound. As the preceptorship lead, you will be responsible for managing the preceptorship programme and providing support to newly qualified staff.
In return, the Directorate offers education and training for all staff with continuing professional development opportunities such as upskilling into specialised areas and enhanced practice such as MSK and H&N scanning.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential:
* HCPC registration or equivalent
* BSc in Diagnostic Radiography or DCR (R) or equivalent
* Post Graduate Qualification in Sonography from a CASE accredited course.
Desirable:
* Holds a Masters degree in ultrasound or management
Experience Essential:
* Significant scanning experience in General Medicine Ultrasound
* Experience in a senior sonographer/leadership role
* Experience teaching/mentoring junior staff
Knowledge Essential:
* Ability to communicate effectively and in a logical manner
* Ability to work within a team
