A Research Associate/Fellow is required to undertake research as part of an MRC funded grant titled: “A Smart Urine Bag for Early Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) Detection”. We aim to develop a completely new approach for the early detection of kidney damage by incorporating a bespoke fibre optic probe into the tubing of a urine catheter. This ‘smart urine bag’ will continuously monitor for the presence of molecules in the urine (called ‘biomarkers’), allowing ongoing surveillance and immediate diagnosis of patients with acute kidney injury (AKI).
We are looking for an enthusiastic, confident research engineer, whose expertise lies in biomedical engineering and fibre optic biosensing and instrumentation.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Fibre Optics Sensor-based instrumentation construction and calibration
2. Fabrication and characterisation of novel fibre optic biosensor for specific biomarkers
3. Integration of fibre optic sensors into tubing
4. Data capture and signal processing
We are looking for enthusiastic, confident, and organised engineering researchers who have a degree, PhD (or close to completion) or equivalent experience in Fibre Optic Sensing, Biomedical Engineering, or Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
The post is offered on a full-time (36.25 hours per week), fixed-term contract until 31 December 2025.
If it sounds like you would be a good fit, we look forward to hearing from you.
