Full-Time, Permanent
Applications are invited for the post of Health and Safety Officer (Audit and Policy) within the Health, Safety, and Business Continuity Directorate.
This role will work under the Head of Health and Safety Operations to carry out internal health and safety auditing of academic Schools and Professional Services Directorates across a range of topics. In addition, they will develop health and safety policies, both new and updates to existing documents, including initial consultation with interested parties, to the University format. They will need to be able to write concisely and convey technical information in a way that is accessible to a wide range of users.
We require an organised and flexible individual with experience of UK health and safety legislation and a proven ability to deliver concise technical writing. The Directorate is customer focused and our health and safety management system is primarily for staff and sometimes students – the successful candidate will need to provide user friendly documents. The audit element will cover a range of areas including offices, our external spaces, commercial activity, laboratories, production studios, events, sport, and residences. Experience in these areas is desirable but not essential – likewise a formal auditing qualification is useful but not required.
As the role will operate across these two areas, organisational and prioritisation skills are essential as the successful candidate will be expected to manage their own workload. They will work with other experts, both within the Directorate and the wider University, to ensure that audit actions and policy requirements are achievable, pragmatic, but ultimately protect those at risk of harm. They will work with others in the team to ensure that actions are captured, assigned, completed, checked, and closed out in a timely manner.
The aim of the Health, Safety, and Business Continuity Directorate is to assist and empower colleagues to allow them to make appropriate decisions about health and safety; people are what is important, and we remain focused on this. While legal compliance is the minimum, we strive for excellence and best practice within the Higher Education (HE) sector. This is achieved through building relationships, both internally and externally, and the role may include completing audits for other local HE providers.
In return we offer a highly competitive rewards and benefits package including:
Generous annual leave entitlement
Training and Development opportunities
Pension Scheme with generous employer contribution
Various schemes including Cycle to Work, Season Ticket Loans and help with the cost of Eyesight testing.
Free parking
