Departmental Lecturer in Japanese

The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies aims to appoint a Departmental Lecturer (DL) in Japanese, for one year to cover the teaching and certain other duties of a permanent post-holder during a period of sabbatical leave. (You must be able to start by 1st October 2025.)
This position is a great opportunity for a suitably qualified and highly effective scholar to develop their career through teaching and research in the field of Classical Japanese language and linguistics at Oxford. The successful candidate will also play an active and valued role in the examination and administration of the Faculty’s undergraduate and graduate courses in the area.
Responsibilities:
1. Teach on Classical and modern Japanese primary sources and their translation into English.
2. Develop and teach lectures and tutorials on various aspects of the field.
3. Communicate and publish research in your field of study.
4. Undertake administrative tasks and provide pastoral support for students.
Qualifications:
1. A completed or near-completed doctorate in Japanese linguistics, Classical Japanese language, or a related field.
2. Strong command of modern and classical Japanese language.
3. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
This position is based in central Oxford. This is a full-time, fixed-term position until 30th September 2026.
