University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire (UHCW) are pleased to offer a post of Robotic Surgery Research Fellow in Colorectal Surgery to contribute to the current robotic surgery research programme at UHCW. Clinical research work will be based at the University Hospitals where fellows will be expected to undertake research activity within General Surgery leading to a successful completion of a higher degree. Candidates will be expected to register for a higher degree (MD or PhD) at Warwick University and will have access to postgraduate research training modules/courses offered by the University. The successful candidate will be expected to self-fund University registration expenses. There will be opportunities to undertake extra shifts at the hospital in the department of general surgery which may help them self-fund the registration expenses.
Main duties of the job
Colorectal Robotic Surgery Project: The proposed project (RIDDLE) is a multicentre cohort study that aims to evaluate robotic surgery for patients with inflammatory bowel disease in terms of efficacy, surgical technique and surgeon stress. This project will build upon the existing body of work that has been undertaken to evaluate surgeon stress during robotic and laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery. The successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of the study, data analysis and reporting of results; it is envisaged that this will lead to a research degree, likely MD/PhD.
The candidate will also help in supporting ongoing robotic training courses and events and will develop new courses depending on availability of their time.
Job responsibilities
The successful candidate will provide a service commitment in the busy Surgical Assessment Unit on a time-tabled basis. Two research fellows will share an on-call slot in a 1:16 on-call general surgery registrar rota. There will be opportunities for training in outpatient, inpatient, and theatres. The remaining time will be committed to the research project. There will be academic and clinical supervision for the candidate to secure clinical and postgraduate research competencies and ISCP portfolio assessments. There will be access to desk space and essential IT equipment at University of Warwick School and University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust. Research projects related travel expenses will be reimbursed and the candidate will be expected to present research outcomes at National/International academic meetings.
