Job summary
Working through the Operational and Performance Manager and General Manager, and in close liaison with the Non Gynae Clinical lead and Specialty Lead, be a key member of the management team responsible for the day-to-day management of staff within the department. This will include recruitment, allocation of workload, assessment of performance, and if necessary management of performance-related issues. Be an experienced Cytologist with the technical and diagnostic abilities to operate specialist equipment and perform highly complex tests that often require the application of advanced interpretative and decision-making skills. Demonstrate expert professional skills and advanced knowledge required of a clinical biomedical scientist working at the level defined by the Diploma of Expert Practice (DEP) in Non Gynaecological Cytology. This will specifically include the reporting of negative urine and respiratory non-gynaecologic specimens equivalent to at least one RCPath defined workload session per week. Have the advanced analytical and judgement skills to deal with highly complex situations that require analysis, interpretation, and comparison of options such as attending FNA and EBUS clinics to provide a sample adequacy service to optimise use of precious diagnostic material. Participate in weekly MDT meetings by preparing, pre-screening, or retrieving case slides including urgent cases from EBUS and FNA clinics required for consultant review.
Main duties of the job
To have the qualifications, specialist knowledge and experience required to primary and rapid screen cervical smears and perform the expert opinion checking role for abnormal cervical cytology. The post-holder must undertake an appropriate update course in Cervical Cytology every three years and will also be expected to attend various conferences and symposia in order to maintain knowledge that is current and valid. To have the specialist knowledge and practical experience to pre-screen abnormal non-gynae samples prior to the slides going to a medical member of staff for reporting. To have the specialist knowledge and practical experience to provide a specimen adequacy assessment when attending fine needle aspiration procedures on any BSPS site. To have the advanced analytical and judgemental skills to act as a source of special expertise in all areas of Cytology (Gynae, Non Gynae). To have the line management and organisational skills required for the supervision and instruction of BMS's, Cytoscreeners and Medical Laboratory Assistants in accordance with departmental protocols. This will involve supervision of the team leaders managing the gynae prep room and non-gynae preparation laboratories. To have the specialist knowledge and skills required to perform root cause analysis and corrective and preventative actions in the discharging of audit non-conformities and other non-conformities in line with BSPS protocols and accreditation standards.

Job responsibilities

To have the specialist knowledge and practical experience to pre-screen abnormal non-gynae samples prior to the slides going to a medical member of staff for reporting. To have the specialist knowledge and practical experience to provide a specimen adequacy assessment when attending fine needle aspiration procedures on any BSPS site. To have the analytical and judgemental skills to be able to perform all appropriate technical procedures in use within the department and to work autonomously when taking the necessary steps in dealing with all technical operational problems which may arise. To have the knowledge and experience required to assess new techniques and equipment for their suitability for adoption by the Cytology department. To have the advanced analytical and judgemental skills to act as a source of special expertise in all areas of Cytology (Gynae, Non Gynae). To have the specialist knowledge and practical experience necessary to work in conjunction with the General Manager and the Operational and Performance Manager to ensure compliance with accreditation standards the laboratory is required to adhere to. To escalate as required to the Non Gynae Clinical Lead and or Specialist Lead. To have the analytical and judgemental skills to be able to assist the Operational and Performance Manager in organizing and facilitating in-house training, testing and certification of technical staff and in-house training of junior medical staff if required. To have the line management and organisational skills required for the supervision and instruction of BMSs, Cytoscreeners and Medical Laboratory Assistants in accordance with departmental protocols. This will involve supervision of the team leaders managing the gynae prep room and non-gynae preparation laboratories. To have the specialist knowledge and skills necessary to manage the department's equipment including maintenance, repair and the assessment and purchase of new equipment when necessary. To ensure the implementation of new and existing policies and to propose and develop changes to practice that will contribute to service improvement. To have the specialist knowledge and skills required to perform root cause analysis and corrective and preventative actions in the discharging of audit non-conformities and other non-conformities in line with BSPS protocols and accreditation standards. To have the specialist training and skills required to both conduct appraisals of laboratory staff and develop training plans/manage performance issues. To have the specialist knowledge and skills necessary to supervise the departmental training officer and ensure that Statutory and Mandatory Training and other essential staff training and competencies are kept current and relevant. This includes ensuring that all staff participate in essential CPD activities.

* IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Cytopathology
* HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist specializing in Cytology
* MSc in Cell Path, Cytology or Biomedical Science or equivalent skills/IBMS qualification (Higher Specialist Diploma)
* Demonstrate the ability to operate autonomously while recognizing the limits of their own competence, seeking advice from consultants when needed.
