About this role:
Research and External Engagement (REE) is a new integrated service dedicated to driving forward the University’s ambitions for, research, innovation, skills and enterprise. This professional service works to support our students, drive research excellence, upskill and reskill the regions workforce, strengthen relationships and engagement with our alumni, business and community partners.
Through cutting-edge research initiatives, hands-on learning opportunities, strategic partnerships, civic leadership, and skills delivery, we will empower individuals to thrive in an ever-changing world.
The Impact and Commercialisation team within REE will drive forward the development of societal impact underpinned by our research and knowledge exchange activities, including identifying commercialisation pathways that help translate research for societal benefit.
The team will work closely with colleagues across REE and with the University’s Colleges and Schools to embed a culture of impact and build institutional capacity and capability to translate research and knowledge exchange activities into impact through clear support systems and delivery of resources, including accelerator accounts and training.
The Impact and Commercialisation Manager will line manage and lead four impact managers within REE, providing the strategic direction and fostering the culture needed to create an impact-focused environment. They will develop, implement and evaluate approaches that advance our impact and commercialisation objectives. They will also be responsible for managing and expanding the university’s intellectual property (IP) portfolio, protecting IP and fostering opportunities for commercial licensing and deal-making and engaging with patent attorneys as well as other expertise within the regional ecosystem.
The Impact and Commercialisation team will develop and manage portfolios of impact activity, designing and implementing institutional frameworks and processes to systematically identify research with high impact potential and ensuring appropriate support mechanisms are in place for development. They will build and strengthen strategic relationships with external partners, including businesses, investors and potential collaborators to support the development of wider impact opportunities. They will work closely and collaboratively with senior research and innovation leaders across the University’s Colleges and Schools and coordinate with other REE and other professional services to deliver a seamless and agile approach to impact and commercialisation.
