We are looking for a talented and highly motivated Principal Policy Officer for Climate and Environment to lead the implementation of the council’s Net Zero Climate Change Action Plan and any future reviews.

About this Principal Policy Officer job:
Becoming Canterbury City Council’s lead expert on policy for climate change and air quality, you’ll work closely with senior management, councillors, project leads and external stakeholders to help all involved realise their environmental goals.
Here’s what you’ll get up to:
* You will drive forward the council’s climate change priorities across the organisation and lead on key projects and initiatives which can reduce emissions in the district, including securing external funding.
* You will provide best practice advice and work with colleagues across the whole council to embed the council’s net-zero targets across our various plans, strategies and projects, including the new Canterbury District Local Plan and its supporting strategies such as for transportation, open spaces and biodiversity.
* You will also play an important role in the delivery of the council’s Corporate Plan and the new Air Quality Action Plan and will work with a variety of external partners and stakeholders to drive the council’s climate change and air quality priorities across the wider region.

Working pattern:
* Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays
* Flexible working arrangements, including working from home / remote working
* Permanent contract, 37 hours per week
About you, the ideal candidate for the job:
Your knowledge:
* a good understanding of the current legislative framework for climate change
Your skills:
* excellent project management and communication skills
* the ability to analyse technical information to produce clear and effective recommendations
* politically astute and able to write clearly and effectively for a variety of audiences
Your experience:
* experience of pioneering new and innovative initiatives and working across disciplines to contribute to the development of new plans, strategies and projects.
