Our Local Neonatal Unit is situated within Northampton General Hospital and is part of a large integrated Child Health Directorate as well as a part of the East Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network.
The post holder in conjunction with the Directorate Matron and Ward Manager will utilise their clinical, teaching and development skills to support and facilitate ongoing education, training, and practice development as part of the education team for the neonatal unit.
The post holder will act as a professional role model to members of the clinical team and will lead and facilitate changes in clinical practice, which enhance care packages for the neonate and family.
Main duties of the job
Staff development, training, and mentorship:
* As Lead Neonatal Educator for the education team you will co-ordinate teaching sessions both formal and at the cot side.
* Develop, implement, and monitor competencies and preceptorship programmes to ensure staff can fulfil their roles.
* To devise, facilitate and co-ordinate competency-based training for all staff to meet local and national expectations.
* In conjunction with the management team devise a planned programme of education and development needs for a range of clinical staff.
* Organise specific competency-based education and training for all clinical staff relating to medical devices.
* Support new ways of working to improve services within the directorate and gain feedback where appropriate.
* Promote a positive learning environment within the unit, which supports personnel and professional growth and development.
* Implement, deliver and evaluate educational programmes for nursing staff in the unit including mandatory and role specific training.
* Work in partnership with the Ward Manager to ensure a high standard of service.
* Network with multi-professional colleagues within and outside the Trust to represent neonatal services.
* Work in partnership with the Ward Manager and specialist staff to ensure staff are appropriately supported and trained to carry out their duties.
* Act as a resource and support to mentors and students and new starters within the unit.

Improving patient and visitor experiences:
* To act as a role model for staff, seeking feedback from others as necessary.
* Consider new and improved ways of working, which enhance patient care, presenting proposals to the Ward Manager and Matron.
* Liaise with members of the multidisciplinary team in the development of protocols and clinical pathways which enhance the journey of the neonate and family.
* In conjunction with staff oversee the development of mechanisms for setting goals and benchmarking standards of care, ensuring they are evidence based and that agreed actions are implemented.
* To champion appropriate support for families. To be a visible support for parents/carers including the incorporation of feedback into the delivery of care.
People/Management Excellence:
* Participate in the recruitment, selection and retention of staff.
* To maintain a suitable learning environment for staff and act as a facilitator/mentor/preceptor in the supervision and teaching of less experienced staff, supporting and facilitating the development of competencies across all staff levels.
Quality Assurance and Monitoring:
* Participate in audit and research projects as appropriate.
* Provide support to all staff undertaking audit projects within the unit.
* To oversee the completion expansion of practice for extended roles.
* To facilitate the benchmarking process in conjunction with the ward manager.
* To use and support the appraisal process to develop staff.
* To participate in the Care Quality Indicators as required and work in conjunction with the Ward Manager to implement any recommendations.
* Present and attend professional conferences and study days.
* To undertake cotside teaching.
* Act as a resource and link with the Universities and the East Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network (EMNODN) and attending meetings as required.

* To work collaboratively with other colleagues across the Trust, in developing practice development and professional education.
* To facilitate any measures to help achieve directorate and Trust targets and disseminate all appropriate information to all members of the nursing team.
* To influence strategic developments in pursuit of advancement of quality in patient care and experience.
* To participate in the development of annual objectives in partnership with professionals and Matron, ensuring that all staff area aware of them and their implementation.

Qualifications
Essential
* Must have Valid NMC registration
* Post registration qualified in speciality neonatal course
* Significant post registration experience at band 6 or above
* Educated to a Masters level (level 7 or above) or willing to work towards
* 1st level register nurse or midwife

* Holds a currently newborn life support (NLS) provider certificate
* Leadership or management training
Desirable
* Holds a ENB A19, R23 or equivalent
* Training in clinical supervision
