An exciting opportunity has arisen in Diabetic Screening, for a proactive individual to join our team as Band 6 Deputy Programme Manager for 37.5 hours per week. This post will have dual responsibility as Deputy Manager supporting the operational management and coordination of the screening programme and also providing Retinal Eye Screening and Grading clinical activity across Sunderland and South Tyneside areas.
The team plays a key role in delivering high quality ophthalmic care working closely with the wider ophthalmology directorate to provide seamless patient care. The post holder will be supported by the Programme Manager and Ophthalmology Directorate clinical and managerial teams.
To ensure the service needs are met, Diabetic Screening offers a 5-day service Monday to Friday. The team delivers high-quality screening to detect the risk of developing eye problems. Finding and treating diabetic retinopathy early can reduce and prevent damage to the eyes and sight loss.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the role include supporting the day-to-day operational management of the screening team, based at The Galleries in Washington providing screening services in a range of community venues. The role will support the team and ensure that staff are deployed effectively and efficiently including adherence to key performance indicators. The successful candidate will be a motivational leader and excellent communicator, seeking to continuously improve the service.
Clinically, they will provide retinal screening and carry out disease grading as per National Standards. Additionally, support evidenced based advice to members of the multidisciplinary team. This is an exciting and varied role, providing a rare opportunity to shape the delivery of retinal screening services. Support will be provided by the management and clinical teams at Sunderland Eye Infirmary as well as from other regional programme leads.

The ideal candidate will have experience of managing staff, as well as qualifications or equivalent experience within retinal screening/diabetic care.
Job responsibilities
To support the Programme Manager in leadership, management, and development of the diabetic screening team, deployment and supervision of staff and ensuring the coordination of services provided and being capable of deputising for the Programme Manager during periods of absence.
Assisting with day-to-day management of the team and supporting the Programme Manager in the delivery of all aspects of patient/client care through the provision of effective clinical/administrative leadership.
To assist in leading, motivating and supporting the team to facilitate best practice in both Sunderland and South Tyneside. Ensure that fundamental aspects of patient care are central to the team, patient safety is a priority and creating an environment where the patient experience is positive.
To assist the Programme Manager in ensuring the Trust's business objectives and national and local targets are achieved.
To take a lead role in ensuring best clinical/administrative practice and promoting the Trust's objectives and philosophy of continuous quality improvement. This includes the requirement to act as a positive role model and mentor, promoting all aspects of providing high quality patient care.
Work collaboratively with multi-professional teams to ensure practice is efficient, effective, evidence-based and safe.
