The Sedation Dental Nurse will provide specialized care to patients with complex needs and activities to ensure that the best possible care and practice is delivered to patients in challenging environments within the framework of the Dental Salaried Service, by providing both inhalation and IV sedation and supporting the whole dental team.
The Sedation Dental Nurse will have responsibility for coordinating, planning and executing the IS & IV Sedation Service and supporting the Management Team.
The Sedation Dental Nurse will be responsible for managing sedation referrals, waiting lists and the utilization of clinical sedation sessions, and collating service data.
Liaise with Management to ensure all operational information such as staffing information is available to carry out planned sedation clinical sessions.
Manage sedation referrals, waiting lists and preparation of booking patient appointments to ensure the maximum utilization of clinics.
Record and process data for the sedation service, compiling accurate reports and reporting the information in meetings to Management.
Operate as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support patients through clinical pathways.
Manage own workload and any clinic changes in conjunction with clinical staff.
Prepare and equip the clinical environment to ensure clinical standards and service requirements are met.
Identify the patient’s dental nursing requirements during treatment and provide high quality care to meet the required need, ensuring the safe and precise delivery of care at all times.
Provide appropriate pre and postoperative information to patients, ensuring that patients understand and comply with the information. This includes information for patients undertaking Conscious Sedation procedures.
Liaise with Clinicians and Pharmacy for ordering the controlled drug Midazolam for use in IV sedation for patient treatment.
Monitor, evaluate and report on the clinical condition of the conscious sedation patient before, during and following the procedure.
Co-ordinate the maintenance of service equipment in line with the compliance framework with Manufacturers Guidance.
Work autonomously and prioritise own workload ensuring key objectives and priorities are met within specified timelines agreed with line manager.
Work independently and have responsibility for own actions when delivering dental nursing care, using agreed lines of communication to escalate to senior managers where necessary.
Provide and utilise a broad skill set when undertaking dental nurse duties and delivering care to patients who access the Salaried Dental Service for specialist treatment which includes children and adults who are:
1. Patients living with a physical disability
2. Patients living with a learning disability
3. Patients living with poor mental health
4. Patients who are medically compromised
5. Patients presenting with psychogeriatric conditions
6. Patients who are dental/needle phobic
7. Patients presenting with a language barrier
8. Patients presenting with behavioural and social problems
Provide support and clinical assistance for the Paediatric and Special Care Dentistry, General Anaesthetic theatre list, the Domiciliary Service and the Epidemiology Survey.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
This post is fixed term for 6 months due to meeting the needs of the service.
