We are looking for nurses who can demonstrate a kind, compassionate, positive attitude, with a desire to provide effective and efficient urgent and Emergency Care practice.
As a senior member of the nursing team, you will be expected to support and lead staff within the Paediatric Emergency Department; acting as a role model and working cohesively with the multidisciplinary team.
You will be expected to assist senior nursing staff with management requirements ensuring that quality service is maintained. You are expected to participate in education throughout the unit and hospital and ensure quality is maintained.

Main duties of the job
1. The post-holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care as part of the multi-disciplinary team from admission to discharge using research-based practice.
2. To deliver care in accordance with the regulatory body’s code of practice and the Trust’s and ED policies and protocols. To be aware of the organisational and nursing strategy.
3. Ensuring safeguarding issues are acted upon promptly and appropriately.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care given to patients.
2. To acquire competency in basic nursing skills for ED.
3. Maintaining awareness of and compliance with Trust policies and protocols at all times to ensure high standards of patient care are maintained.
4. Working effectively within the multi-disciplinary team to ultimately achieve desired outcomes for patients and their families.
5. Liaising with social care, health visitors and the children's wards to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children seen in the ED.
6. Ensuring the safety of patients in accordance with local and national safeguarding procedures.
7. Providing leadership that promotes a patient-focused approach to care, acting as a role model to junior colleagues and students and a support mechanism for senior colleagues.
8. Encouraging and supporting junior staff in professional growth, and development and mentoring students as appropriate.
9. Being proactive in maintaining local and national Quality Indicators for ED.
10. Participating in research/special projects/audit as requested by the Operations Manager/Lead Nurse.
11. Participating in the developing and monitoring of standards of care and other quality initiatives in a positive manner.
12. Developing personal and professional leadership skills and being proactive in problem solving.
13. Being responsible and accountable for one’s own actions and encouraging the same amongst others.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
* Part 1 Registered Nurse – Child or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE
* Post-Registration qualification in Children’s Emergency Nursing or equivalent.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE - SPECIAL
* Clinical documentary competence in: - IV Drug Administration - Plastering - Minor Injury Assessment & Treatment
* Ability to coordinate and lead nursing care in individual areas of the emergency department.
* Specialist emergency care knowledge enabling the delivery of a high standard of clinical care to the patients, supervision of staff; and support for all grades of medical staff.
* Ability to anticipate the changing workload and to make effective decisions to allocate staff accordingly.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with the patients; the multidisciplinary team; emergency services; and the outside agencies necessary for the efficient running of the department.
* Proven leadership qualities necessary to lead the emergency team.
* Ability to deal with relatives in stressful or bereavement situations, giving a high level of support and advice.
* Able to recognise the potential for physical or verbal violence and take action to defuse the situation.
* Ensure correct use of IT system, and be aware of the importance of information.
* Be aware of role in a major incident and be capable of managing the department response to an incident.
* An understanding of professional issues relating to safeguarding the child and family.
