Cellular Pathology at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an enthusiastic and highly skilled HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist / Clinical Scientist to join our friendly Histopathology team based at the Oxford Road Campus site. The Adult Histopathology processes approximately 40,000 specimens annually and is a large tertiary gynaecology site. It offers a comprehensive service including routine histology (H&Es), post mortem histology, special stains, immunohistochemistry, and frozen sections. As an Advanced Practitioner in Specimen Dissection, you will provide specialist dissection dealing primarily with head and neck specimens but also covering a range of specimen types in sub-specialist areas such as skin, gynae, and gastrointestinal.
1. With support from the Consultant Histopathologist team, and following competency assessment, you will be independently dissecting category A - E specimens using RCPath data sets.
2. You will, in conjunction with Consultant Pathologists, interpret national policies for your specialised section and take part in their implementation.
3. Sharing the responsibility with the Specialty Lead Pathologist of the specialist team for training of BMS/Junior Medics in cut-up techniques.
4. You will be able to demonstrate extensive knowledge and experience of the specialist techniques associated with dissection including decalcification, fixation, macro photography, tissue processing, and embedding techniques.
We support and encourage our Biomedical Scientists to undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities, which could include internal talks and seminars, as well as attending approved courses. We have a dedicated Training Lead supporting the Directorate strategy for training, along with Training Officers within each department. The department has full HCPC training status for pre and post-registration IBMS portfolios, and full ISO 15189 accreditation.
Suitable candidates will have extensive theoretical knowledge and experience within Histopathology and hold the Advanced Specialist Diploma (ASD) in Specimen Dissection. However, consideration will be given to those applicants that hold the Diploma of Expert Practice in Specimen Dissection who are willing to undertake the ASD qualification. Candidates must be HCPC registered and have completed an MSc or equivalent in a relevant scientific subject or have completed the Scientific Training Programme specialising in Histopathology dissection.
