We are looking for an experienced dietitian to join our friendly team to provide our upper GI oncology dietetic service.
The successful candidate will take the lead for our upper GI patient cohort which includes supporting those patients during their radiotherapy, on the newly established unit on site. The dietitian forms an integral part of the MDT and there are plenty of opportunities for audit and project work.
Continued professional development is important to us and we have excellent access to learning opportunities and external courses within the trust. The department supports student placements.
The department currently consists of a team of registered dietetic staff and dietetic assistants providing services in inpatient, outpatient and community settings across Swindon. The team support a range of specialties including paediatrics, oncology, specialist weight management, diabetes, home enteral feeding & gastroenterology. We have a dietetic ACP working in complex nutritional support and 2 nutrition nurses. We are supported by a fantastic admin team.
This service will be transitioning to HCRG Care Group from the 1stApril 2025. The successful candidate may transfer over (under Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006) on the terms and conditions they are employed on. • To provide highly specialist dietetic expertise to upper GI oncology patients as an autonomous practitioner, managing a caseload of patients with highly complex nutritional needs.
• To lead on developing, planning, delivering and evaluating an evidence based, highly specialist dietetic service to upper GI oncology patients referred to the oncology dietetic service at the Great Western Hospital.
• To act as a lead expert clinician, providing relevant and timely highly specialist advice and guidance on Upper GI oncology dietetics.
• To undertake the highly specialist, holistic assessment of upper GI oncology patients’ nutritional status, many of whom have a complex presentation, using advanced investigative communication and
analytical skills, taking account of medical, social, cultural and psychological states across all clinical settings.

• To act as an expert practitioner, formulating individualised management plans, using advanced clinical
reasoning/reflection and utilising a wide range of highly developed treatment skills. Nutritional treatment plans will be formulated that enable patients to withstand the adverse side effects of upper GI cancer treatment.
• To work as part of the multi-professional Macmillan Upper GI oncology team to enhance the quality of life of upper GI oncology patients by delivering highly specialist nutrition and dietetic advice to assist them to gain relief from distressing symptoms; to minimise the adverse effects of treatment; maximise their potential for functional independence and support their carers.
• To deliver a highly specialised programme of care and make necessary adjustments as required to support upper GI oncology patients, carers and relatives throughout all stages of their disease, from diagnosis to end stage. This will include prioritising clinical needs and delegating where appropriate to provide an effective and efficient Dietetic service.
• To make decisions and inform wider decision-making processes using evidence-based guidance, clinical judgement, management information, family and carer beliefs and financial/budgetary
constraints where a range of options may be appropriate.
• To advise on the prescription of specialist dietary products which may include prescribing and/or authorising changes to prescribed products, in the role of a Supplementary Prescriber ensuring
appropriate monitoring of the nutritional status of the patient
