Clinical Fellow in General and Breast Surgery

We currently have a vacancy at the registrar level in our General / Breast Surgery Department and are looking to recruit an appropriately skilled and enthusiastic individual to work as at ST3 level or above. This post is a full-time position involving elective work with our General / Breast team predominantly based at Solihull Hospital, with an on-call commitment to the emergency service at Heartlands Hospital. The post will be available for a period of 1 year, subject to a satisfactory 6-month probation period; the post can be extended if mutually agreed.
The post holder will need to be hardworking, innovative, show initiative, be a team worker, and have good communication skills. They will be expected to have significant experience in the assessment of breast disease, general and emergency surgical conditions and to be able to work at the ST3 level. The candidate will also be expected to hold the MRCS or equivalent.
Main Duties of the Job
The appointee will be working with the General / Breast team to provide a comprehensive breast service to patients presenting to the UHB site. This post will be ideal for a surgeon with a major interest in breast diseases. The post holder will be required to provide high-quality and effective clinical care to the population served by our trust.
The UHB breast service offers a full spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic breast services to its local population, including fast-track clinics for triple assessment at all 3 sites. Follow-up clinics and surgeries are undertaken only at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Solihull Hospital. The theatre sessions at Solihull Hospital are from Tuesday to Friday, and there is a dedicated day care unit. There is a weekly joint MDT meeting on Wednesday and Thursday.
If you are successful in your application process, you will be joining our team currently consisting of one international oncoplastic fellow, one ST3 General Surgical trainee, and a surgical SHO at Solihull Hospital. The post holder will have elective sessions supporting the Breast team and will contribute to a 1:16 emergency rota at the Heartlands site. The general surgical team provides a full and comprehensive range of emergency services.
Job Responsibilities
1. Provide medical support to outpatient clinics, wards, and theatre.
2. Examine both new and old patients within the Outpatient Departments, diagnosing and treating conditions using appropriate clinical methods.
3. Undertake ward rounds and examine patients on wards/departments facilitating patient flows and discharge.
4. Manage the workload and duties of the juniors within the firm.
5. Participate in the teaching of medical students.
6. Administrative duties such as audit and discharge dictation.
7. Be a member of the Directorate of General Surgery.
8. Be managerially and clinically accountable via the Clinical Service Leads and Hospital Medical Directors within the Clinical Decision Group.
Job Plan
You will be attached to the General / Breast surgical team at ST3+ and will be required to be flexible to allow cover for some elective sessions across the trust. You will be covering the whole range of clinical activities, theatre, clinics, and ward duties as well as emergency surgery. You will have an educational supervisor to support your development and will be expected to deliver at least one quality improvement project within the year and will be expected to have a formal trust appraisal within 12 months.

Qualifications
* Any basic medical qualification eligible for registration with the GMC.
* MRCS.
Experience
* Full-time hospital service experience as a Registrar or equivalent in the NHS.
* General surgical experience.
* Experience in audit and research.
* Demonstration of keeping up to date with knowledge.
* A high degree of competence in all basic medical skills coupled with evidence of manual dexterity necessary to perform technical procedures, namely surgical procedures.
* 1 year of experience in Breast Surgery would be optimal.
