You will be supported in your development by the practice development team and in your day to day role by the Ward Manager and Nurse in Charge. This role may require you to work on other sites across EKHUFT to ensure the needs of the service are met.
This role covers duties within the Acute Children’s areas, Day case wards and to rotate in to Children’s outpatient areas. On the acute wards you will support the Registered Nurse to provide safe and compassionate care while undertaking some administrative and house-keeping duties to ensure the ward runs efficiently. You will be expected to support less experienced staff and monitor the quality of their work. When working in outpatients you will be responsible for the day to day organisation of the area, including maintaining standards in line with Trust policy, reporting issues and ensuring they are resolved/escalated as needed. You will be supported by the Nurse in Charge/Ward Manager.

Senior Paediatric Health Care SupportWorkerRole specific duties

Clinical
Work under the supervision of a registered nurse to ensure that patient’s individual physical, social and psychological needs are met.
· Assist patients to meet personal and oral hygiene needs.
· Orientate children and families to the Ward
· Ensure privacy and dignity of patients is maintained at all times
· Support the nutritional care of children and their families.
· Assist with collection, labelling and dispatching of specimens
· Undertake and accurately record vital signs on Vital Pac, following all escalation messages and reporting to registered practitioner. Perform clinical skills (once trained and competent to do so)- for example but not limited to-

· Ensuring the ward environment is clean and uncluttered
· Daily ward safety checks
· Ensure the safe storage of medication
· Support the Play team to provide play and distraction to children
· Recognise change in child’s condition and escalate appropriately
· Assisting in the response to a medical emergency
• Adhere to and implement the Trust policy in relation to Child Protection policy.
• Become proficient and agreed as competent in assembling medical equipment as required, support the routine servicing and maintenance of equipment and arrange the repair when necessary. Ensuring all equipment on the ward is cleaned in line with Trust and local policy.
• Ensure all nursing disposable supplies and stationary are well stocked
• Safe Moving and handling of patients and equipment in line with Trust policy
Admin and Clerical
• To answer the telephone, in a timely and courteous manner, referring all enquiries to the relevant person or department.
• To co-ordinate the day to day running of the Childrens outpatient clinic under the supervision of the acute ward/trained member of nursing staff. Perform clinical and administrative tasks as required during the clinic day to ensure the department is safe and efficient.
• Follow Trust Guidelines in the management of controlled stationary.
• Monitor the security video controlled entry bell, giving directions and instructions as required.
• To deputise for the ward clerk in their absence and provide support during times of peak activity.
• Admit, discharge and print patient documentation from the Patient administration system. Ensure PAS and the electronic white board accurately reflect ward activity in real time.
• Follow trust policy to protect the confidentiality of information.
• Provide general administrative support to the team; Photocopying, running errands, liaising with other departments.
Research and Training
• Seek opportunities to create changes, which will enhance standards of care and practice.
• Attend in house and external training relevant to role
• Support the Team in the implantation of paediatric research/development programmes.
Quality
• Ensure all patients are treated in a kind and courteous manner.
• Ensure a high standard of cleanliness and tidiness within the ward and outpatient areas.
• Work in accordance with the Health Act (2006)
• Comply with national and local infection control policies and procedures.
• Maintain accuracy and legibility of patient records in accordance with trust policy.
• Maintain nursing standards as required by all relevant legislation.
• Participate in the collection of Audit data and be responsive to the implementation of action plans.
• Assist in the maintenance and monitoring of agreed standards, ensuring that any shortfall is brought to the attention of a line manager.
• Report any issues requiring the attention of the estates department.
• Use the clinical incident reporting procedure for reporting untoward incidents.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all members of the multidisciplinary team
• Maintain patient confidentiality
• Have a functional knowledge of Trust Policies and procedures and where to access these.
• Implement health promotion opportunities with patients and families

• Communicate effectively with children and their relatives, ensuring accurate and seamless information is conveyed and documented
• Ensure that accurate and legible patient records are kept (when required) in line with professional and legal requirements, under the direct supervision of a trained member of nursing staff.

• Attends for rostered activity in a timely manner.
