An opportunity has arisen within the Operational Estates Department of the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary for an experienced, skilled Plumber/Fitter, to assist both our Directly Employed Labour (DEL) workforce trade operatives and external contractors in the maintenance and repair of the Trust's built environment. Applicants should be time served in an appropriate discipline, preferably related to the maintenance of Plumbing/Fitting building services, plant and equipment. In addition, you should be able to demonstrate significant knowledge and ability in other maintenance disciplines outside of your core craft skills. You should be willing to undertake further formal or informal personal developments to enhance your skills and knowledge to ensure you can provide the highest standards of service to our patients, staff and visitors.
The position will primarily be located at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary site but will also provide support to our Operational Estates services across the wider Trust sites. The Estates & Facilities Division provides a wide range of operational estates repair/maintenance, minor works and capital project services across the Trust's sites.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will undertake a lead role within the Operational Estates Team in undertaking the management and maintenance of the Trust's Estates engineering equipment and systems.
The post holder's duties will include the installation, maintenance, service, repair, inspection, testing, and commissioning of healthcare engineering equipment and systems across the Trust's estate and built environment.
The post holder will provide an effective and efficient maintenance repair service to a high quality on the full range of building fabric, mechanical engineering, plant and equipment within their trade discipline and other disciplines within their capability. Typical systems may include boilers, heating systems, and air conditioning systems.

Job responsibilities
The post holder's duties will require an excellent understanding of healthcare engineering, equipment and systems within an NHS acute hospital environment. This will include a good understanding of the associated Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) and Health Building Notes (HBN) mandatory guidance documents and relevant statutory requirements.
The post holder must be able to effectively maintain accurate records relating to the management and maintenance of Estates engineering. This requirement will include the creation and use of databases and spreadsheets to support effective records management within the department. This will include maintaining and updating the Operational Estates CQC and CAAS (compliance) evidence folders.
* The post holder must be able to refer to and understand building and engineering technical drawings and specifications.
* The post holder must be able to interpret technical manuals and as-fitted information.
* The post holder must be competent in solving technical issues including fault finding, fault diagnosis, problem solving and solution finding upon complex systems and equipment. This will require multiple periods of prolonged concentration during the working day.
The post holder will have responsibility for the satisfactory preparation of plant and equipment for weekly, monthly, quarterly, six monthly and annual statutory and/or mandatory inspection, examination, and verification exercises.
The post holder will be expected to undertake inspection, testing and commissioning duties on a regular basis within their engineering discipline.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Completed a recognised Mechanical/Plumbing craft apprenticeship. Qualification to a minimum of NVQ Level 3. (E.g. B-TEC ONC or CGLI Advanced Craft Level)
* Steam Boiler Operative (BOAS) Course
* Any relevant qualifications or experience in a secondary trade. Current Gas Safe registration. Accepted qualifications by City and Guilds in sterilisation and washer disinfection testing.
Experience
* 2 years post qualification experience within an engineering or building maintenance environment. Excellent working knowledge of Plumbing/Mechanical systems.
* Excellent working knowledge of Mechanical and plumbing systems
* Knowledge of the safe operation of steam generating plant and associated equipment including steam distribution networks.
* Previous Estates & Facilities (maintenance and repair based) employment within an NHS acute hospital environment.
Skills
* Ability to work with other trades and unsupervised. Highly versatile and receptive to training initiatives and change.
* Any wider knowledge/interests related to construction, maintenance and repair activities.
Knowledge
* Good communicator. Good level of literacy and numeracy skills. Good level of IT (PC based) skills.
* Any wider knowledge/interests that would supplement the essential criteria for the post. Any form of recognised educational qualification.
Additional
* Current driving licence. Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation.

£29,970 to £36,483 a year with a 6% uplift on basic salary for on-call duties.
