This is an exciting opportunity for the appointee to work in a major NW London NHS trust, with a
reputation for educational excellence within a friendly and supportive culture!
This post is based at Ealing Hospital theatres, which is one of three sites within our trust (Northwick Park, Ealing and Central Middlesex Hospitals). Successful candidates will further their experience
in a range of surgical subspecialties, to include elective and emergency upper & lower general surgery, orthopaedics/trauma, gynaecology, endoscopy, and dental surgery. The upper GI service
has recently expanded, providing increased capacity for surgery such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy and an upper GI hub is planned for the near future.
There is a dedicated emergency/trauma theatre list 24/7, with weekday consultant cover. In addition, the department
provides an outreach service for ECT and for DC cardioversions in the Coronary Care Unit. Also included are potential opportunities to work at the Northwick Park Hospital site to broaden this case
mix, to include major head & neck, vascular, obstetrics, urology and major colorectal surgery.
The post holder must:
- Know when to ask for help, whom to ask for help, and not act beyond the level of his/her own competence. There is always an anaesthetic middle grade onsite and also a supervising consultant/duty consultant for guidance and assistance

- In the event of a list cancellation or early finish, be available on site for possible reassignment to other lists.

LOCATION OF DUTIES
Duties will be primarily based on Ealing and Northwick Park sites.
The post holder should be prepared to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. Commitments arising in such circumstances are however exceptional and the post holder will not be required to undertake work of this kind for
prolonged periods or on a regular basis. All efforts will be made to ensure that work of this kind does not result in continuous hours of duty which exceed the New Deal continuous hours of duty limits.
London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH) cares for the people of Brent, Ealing, Harrow and beyond.
Our team of more than 8,200 clinical and support staff serve a diverse population of almost one million people.
We run major acute services at:
• Northwick Park Hospital: home to one of the busiest emergency departments (A&E) in the country. The hospital provides a full range of services including the country’s top-rated hyper-acute stroke unit and one of only three hyper-acute rehabilitation units in the UK
• St Mark’s Hospital: an internationally renowned specialist centre for bowel disease
• Ealing Hospital: a busy district general hospital providing a range of clinical services, as well as 24/7 emergency department and urgent care centre, and specialist care at Meadow House Hospice
• Central Middlesex Hospital: our planned care site, hosting a range of surgical and outpatient services and collocated with an urgent care centre.
We are a university teaching NHS trust, in recognition of the important role we play in training clinicians of the future and bringing the benefits of research to the public.
The anaesthetic department is highly regarded in the region as a centre of excellence for anaesthetic educational initiatives, with our friendly reputation for supporting and training anaesthetic trainees
and locally employed doctors. We have consultants with additional roles as Royal College of Anaesthetists examiners (including lead examiner) and London School of Anaesthesia training program directors. We desire all our team to achieve their maximal potential! Our success speaks
for itself- many of our recent trainees have chosen to return as substantive consultants, most of our locally employed doctors and trainees have successfully achieved their FRCA exam with us, gained
national training numbers and even specialist registration via the GMCs portfolio pathway.
We have recently set up a highly sought after CESR/portfolio pathway program.
This post is ideal for a junior anaesthetist and it is essential that candidates have a minimum of 6 months
experience in anaesthesia and have evidence of achieving their Initial Assessment of Competence (IAC) or equivalent. There will be opportunities for the successful applicant to gain further clinical
experience, with potential to develop educational, management and quality improvement initiatives to support their own professional development. It could also provide a route to either applying for a
Specialist Training number or following an alternative path, such as the CESR/portfolio pathway route.
